I prefer my speakers wrapped in real wood veneers that actually look and feel like wood. But you have spend thousands now if you want that.
It's the same issue with furniture, musical instruments, and anything else made with quality hardwoods.

No, you dont have to spend thousands. Check out Tape Ease.
I was thinking commercially produced speakers. It seems like everything under a few grand is wrapped in laminates, although now you're making me wonder why.
If you don't need fancy, it looks like there are multiple options on that Tape Ease web site that would cost <$50 per pair of standmounts and <$100 per pair of small to medium floorstanders. If I assume a 6x markup from manufacturer cost to retail price, that's still not that expensive. I would certainly pay the difference for veneer. It's only the exotics that get really expensive.
Perhaps it's just that people prefer a laminate with a fancy pattern and gloss coat over a more traditional wood veneer.
Ahh, OK. You were talking about buying commercial. I always think DIY. I have been buying from Tape Ease for years. A great company to deal with. 4x8 sheets of veneer come rolled up in a long (4 ft.+) box, about 6" square. I pull out the veneer, and lay it on the floor for a few days to help release the curve. One sheet will typically do a pair of floor standing speakers.
Vintage and used... Most of the time the build quality is better. I haven't auditioned a speaker lately that tempted me to buy it. I can get more for my money on the used market.....
