and Hsu Research. Unfortunately, these two are about $400 each, so dissatisfaction could be costly.I use a heavily modified Dahlquist DQ-LP1 crossover with my Yamaha CR2020 receiver, a NAD 2600A amp for the passive subs, and Polk RM1000 stereo subs(picture below). The Dahlquist crossover has a passive high pass circuit and an active low pass circuit. This system may not be very high end, but I am very pleased with the clear, distinct, bass. I detect no problems with my main speakers either, and they are Hitachi HS-500s. These subs only lower the response of my system by one octave, so I may try another passive pair in the future. My wife still tells me to turn down the bass, even though the system is in the basement.
At my other home, I use a stereo pair of Hsu Research HSW10 passive subs through a Hsu Research crossover linked below(second picture below). The Hsus go incredibly low, but the crossover has a volume control so the dishes in the cupboard can stop chattering. This crossover has both active high pass and low pass circuits. Unfortunately, I use a Denon receiver as a preamp and an amp for the subs plus a NEW A-20 amp for the main PSB Alpha speakers. So this system may not tell me what I might be missing. There is certainly no distortion of any kind. I do have nulls in the room, but I avoid those at my listening position.

Mucking around the low-end since 1986.
Actually, the clarity of the passive filters is nice. And they are dirt cheap. Since it sounds pretty good now I don't think I'll be changing my speaker setup for a while.
That Hsu crossover does look just about perfect though.
Nice system, love the vintage receiver.
Those Hsu subs are awesome.
