I mean personal postings and use. Not company and sellers statements.
I'm considering either buying two and building my own stereo subs. I'm having trouble getting my head around buying $2000 of sub to put under a $400 set of speakers. Just seems very wrong?????? Besides I am a big believer that subwoofer plate amps blow ever few years anyway.
Follow Ups:
hypex makes some of the FINEST class D amplifiers, and in the case of ncores, finest amps PERIOD for high fidelity audio as often class D amps are sterile and sometimes even harsh in the treble, but bass? bass is class D bread and butter. the playing field is way more level when it comes to bass.
i doubt you'll find sub plate amps that can in any meaningful way surpass hypex, but for subbing, a $200 (even cheaper if you wait for a sale) 500w parts express plate amp will be all you need UNLESS you're driving 4 ohms or less. if you're giving the amp an 8 ohm load though, a cheaper plate amp will do the job just as well.
i'd be more worried about the NUMEROUS forms of distortion a ported speaker introduces than a fraction of a percent difference between amps. your driver and box type choices are going to have a much bigger difference than amp choice in the bass department. i doubt you'd even be able to hear a difference and would need some really high end gear to measure differences between the two amps driving a sub.
high and mid frequencies, combined with stereo interactions, are much more trying on an amp than bass, unless you're NOT using class D. class D would tend to stomp most "conventional" amps driving subs with more balls and tighter cone control.
I use their 200wpc plate amp. I like it a lot. Good features, bulletproof and the bass is very tight and controlled as is the norm for Hypex amps. I had used a 500 watt Dayton amp and the hypex is much better features and sound. I don't fill a large space, so the 200wpc is ok, but you might need more.
Thanks
It's between two 300+ watt Hypex amps or Rythmik has a kit for $600
this won't do you much good unless you find another to go with it but I was over at a local dealers place yesterday and he showed me some used stuff he would like to move. Among the items was a Monitor Audio GSW12. He had it on ebay for 795.00 but said he would take 600.00 Originally a 2000.00 sub he said would go down to 18-20hz. Shoot me an email if you're interested and I can put you in contact with him.
And safety ground free

Hi Charles:
Here's something I threw together. It's based on the same components as Ed Schilling's "Redneck Subwoofer" with a Peerless driver and PE plate amp. It built it to utilize available space in my rack, fires forward, and is sealed. The amp is mounted outside the box to get as much volume as possible. It's almost centered in the listening space. I've even thought I could build a duplicate and turn it vertical and have some kind of integrated speaker stands/dual subs for my SR71 or PE Baronettes. It's isolated from my DIY rack and rests on the floor with small feet. I'm sure most folks will say it's crap because it doesn't go real low but it's not for HT anyway, just music. I'm currently using my JM Lab Daline 3.1 but as soon as the Christmas tree goes away, I'll do some experimentation. Merry Christmas.

Hey, he's right how do you get that TT to work without that sub rattling it?
As I posted below PE is having a dog of a time with their new supply of plate amps. Tons of failures and noisy. I originally planned on using their amps but after reading the reviews - change of plans.
I plan on building stereo subs. I tried it with "cheaper" models and it worked out great for me. I can salvage one sub but I do need at least one other. Then there is the amp mismatch. Not critical but I do need something at least similar. I'm using a Kreiger 300 watt plate amp.
It's not crap but I would never incorporate a speaker much less a sub into a rack where vibration should eliminated not created. And with a TT on it no less.

Good point - a TT and sub - hummmm
Before I decided to drive my subs with a Pass X250,I posted here for recommendations.
Peter Norbeck/PBN tipped me off to a plate-amp at Madisound.It was a Hypex 800W unit.I believe it had single-ended and balanced in/out and a variable crossover.$600 ea.
They may be up from that price point, but would check them out.
Still using the original AB amps in the Dayton Audio 250W plate-amps.The "newer" versions weren't as good and more noisy (hum). But for HT,still dependable

I'm reading the reviews on the newer PE amps and they're awful. What happened???? This is what's forcing me to look into other more expensive plate amps.
Over at Madisound they no longer carry Keiger (sp?). I've used them for decades and never had a problem. I was being a nice guy and gave someone my two extras I had kicking around. Yes,$$ MISTAKE.
Rythmik has a kit form I may look into for around $600 each. Heck, if the plate amp is going to cost me $400 what the heck!
175 watts isn't a lot for a sub amp.....
And even if it is OK for the size of one's current listening room, who's to say a larger one might come along at some point?
I'd look at Rhythmic or BASH amps in the 300W or higher category.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
