I am considering the Image speakers from PSB for my HT setup, and need some advice from anyone familiar with this line. My initial plan was to use the Image 5T's as the fronts, the 8C as the center, and the 1B's as the surrounds. After going to the PSB site, and checking their suggested HT packages, I am now somewhat concerned about my choices.
They suggest matching the 5T's with the 9C center and the 3LR's as surrounds. My budget is more in line with the 5T's/8C/1B's combo versus PSB's suggesytion. Will I be jeopardizing anything with my setup ?
Follow Ups:
If you go through the reviews in the psb site you will see that for the rear channels it has been recommended to use PSBs bi-polars - dont have the model number but its not the 3LSs.
Could you spring for 2Bs for the rears?
Thanks Carlo & KSH, one more question - My current speakers are sealed JBL D315's(fronts). They have 15" woofers and it seems to me that it takes a LOT of power to drive them. My receiver is an Elite VSX-24TX rated @ 90wpc. If I want it loud, I usually have the volume somewhere in the -20 to -10 range which is 2/3 up. This shouldn't be from what I understand.
So, will the 6ohm PSB's, which are ported, take less power to drive or more ? I'm hoping less since I feel that I'm currently 'pushing' the VSX a little hard.
Thanks.
It'll take less power. I assume the JBL's are 8 ohm speakers, and when you lower the impedence of a speaker, the amplifier sees a smaller load. Just so ypu know PSB's generally give an easy load (the impedence cure is pretty linear) so you shouldn't have any problems with pushing the amp too hard
Well I just discovered a new problem in my quest for these speakers. It turns out that on Pioneer's website, they guarantee a 6 ohm load with the Elite VSX-24TX, however, in the manual I read that they "recommend" 8 - 16 Ohm speakers.
With this in mind what do you folks think now ? What disadvantages am I now faced with if I decide to ignore their 'recommendation' and go with the 6 Ohm PSB's ?
That's not going to be a problem. You'll be able to drive the speakers without hurting your amp - everyone's done it at some time or another (I've driven 4 ohm loads with an h/k receiver, no problem). Once again, the PSBs are an easy load. If you're really worried about it just send Pioneer an email.
KSH is right, you won't have any problems. Big rear speakers are nice when a movie pushes some bass through them (example - Fight Club), but the majority of time small speakers are fine. Besides that's what bass management on your receiver will be for. The 8c is a fine center channel. I personally like large center channels and rear speakers in home theater set ups, but honestly it usually is overkill .Don't worry about spending the extra money, stick with your original plan. But if you really want that huge sound, save up for the bigger speakers.
The 9c is bigger than the already huge 8c, and may match up a little better same drivers. Space is probably the greatest consideration here. Listen to them both - you may not hear much difference.FOr the rears the 1B would be fine - I find little info comes from them except during action scenes and the 1b can handle that fine.
Sounds like a pretty nice setup.
As a dealer of PSB, I concur. *Ideally* you want to match the front and center speakers as closely as possible, but the 5T and 8C will sound just fine. It's hard to go wrong with with any combination of Image speakers, they are very closely matched, sonically, in the critical ranges. PSBs are also very efficient, you shouldn't have any problem driving them.
Groverg, please check your email, thanks.
