Jeff I could have just emailed you and asked but I am curious (if you can remember) what approx is the efficiency or sensitivity of the large fulton premiere p12's?
my guess would be 90db watt meter?

I had a set for quite a while.
Hello Ralph, care to comment on there eff or sensitivity?
Lawrence
They are as I mentioned- about 87-88 db and and about 8 ohms. Being 8 ohms the sensitivity and efficiency specs are the same thing.
So you can play them with a tube amplifier but its nice to get some power behind them unless you have a smaller room. I've seen them played with a Dynaco ST-70 but I think you need about 60 watts as a good minimum.
Hello Ralph, Thanks for information, As you well know Robert Fulton used a few different amplifiers one of the best was little 25watt HK430 that I use, I have not clipped that amp on my P12 a Fulton J yes but not my p12
so I am in search for the best possible amplifier to DIY to play with, I am skeptical that there is better then the hk430 :)
Ralph do you remember talking with Fred Devire? Did Fred use your OTL amplifiers?? if so how did they play?
any other help or insight is appreciated
Lawrence
The story at the time was that Bob Fulton had input at Harman-Kardon regarding design of the HK 430. So it was a popular choice for the smaller FMI speakers. I helped a woman from work set up a system built around a HK 430 and FMI 80s.
I remember hearing the J System driven by ARC electronic but that was early on. Later he demo'ed them with his own amp called the Footlocker since it was enclosed within one. He also favored a little known preamp (forget the brand) which was tailored to the Shure V-15 conical cartridge he loved as well.

We ran our amps on the Js, the Premieres and the ones with the Oval Window (that's the speakers that Fred had; its been a while and I don't remember that model number right now). All of the speakers were tube friendly and our amps ran fine on them. In fact using the 60s, 80s, 100s, Nuances and the B subwoofers our amps drove all of them just fine.
Fred had our MA-1s and both he and Robert Fulton maintained that was the best the speaker ever sounded. I have to say it was pretty impressive- one of the few speakers at the time that got the bass right when we played Canto General (which has a six foot bass drum in the recording).
Yes I thought my friend Frank was correct, himself and Fred were buddies along with Robert. when fred died Frank acquired most of freds audio stuff except the large fulton oval window speakers. someone else wanted them..which from what i am told didn't play as well as the j's or premieres . I now own the smaller tempo oval window speaker that fred owned along with all of freds master tapes :) his preamp and some of the fulton cartridges including the diamond!
I am a young lad im 45 been in this hobby for about 17 years and I still think IMO Fulton stuff is tops!
anyways now you have me thinking I need to build a OTL or get a kit from you? I'm not a wealthy man but maybe we can work something out
p.s. I think the large oval window speaker was called the symphony
Lawrence
OTLs do work well on FMIs. But you need one with some power- 60 watts would be about the minimum unless you were using a set of 80s or the like.
I thought the Symphonies did the job as well as the Js. They were a lot easier to drive and didn't lack for detail or bandwidth.
I personally have not heard the symphony's, but one of my mentors have he said it was not a finished speaker and preferred the premiere's.
I would have loved to have heard them, from what I understand they were even larger then the premiere speaker.
I am still somewhat puzzled Ralph why do you think i need at least watts per channel? does this have to do with OTL somehow? I would think watts are watts yeah?
Ralph any customers in my area Phoenix Arizona have your amplifiers? may audition etc?.
Thanks I sent you an email

- and when you put a really clean amplifier on it you will find that you use the extra power quite naturally. If the amp has a lot of distortion it might sound loud without actually being all that loud.
We have a dealer in Scottsdale
Ok great you have a dealer in Scottsdale I'm in surprise AZ so not too far away
what is the dealer name? home or business?

...in your subject line. If I don't recognize a message sender, I double-delete the message without opening it--I get simply too much trash.
