if the content is bass heavy and is pushed, you will likely clip the bass amp first - which is less audible that if you clip the main amp.

They all can clip.
It depends on how hot the incoming signal is and although some have limiters built in most have merely a clip indicator trusting the operator to turn them down when need be.
Personally I've built enough headroom into mine so that windows rattle and things fall of shelves before the amps clip or the drivers scream for mercy.
However I do run a total of just over 900W per side.
a kilowatt or more, perhaps. The Infinity IRS bass towers were each powered by a 2 kW amp.
