Which popular budget ( around $500 ) speakers have paper cone drivers? I know of Tannoy but are there many others? Thanks.
Cheers
Bill

Paper is still in there as a good choice.

Thanks, Timbo.
I was reading the review of Dali Zensor 1 by RJR in July S'phile and I thought perhaps some of the special qualities he found were due to the paper pulp driver. And I hope Tannoy would concentrate a bit more on Budget speakers.

Paper cones sound their best when they are coated with Elmer's carpenter's glue....WOW !!
they are fast and pretty tranparent, but too upfront for some, and a bit untidy on top. The later versions have a smoother top end.
I have not heard this speaker but there is every reason it should sound very good. Madisound has a a kit, less enclosures, for $350.
Audio Note AX Two - I just bought a pair. Paper woofers silk dome tweeters. Tremendous bass response for the size and price. $650ish
RGA, I may be treading into slippery ground here, Audio Note! Would it be happy with budget SS amps I wonder. Great buy of course with single ended triode and stuff. I never knew of a $650 AE. Thanks for the information.
Regards
Bill
They have a $350-$400 speaker in the AX One - I wasn't a fan of the old one but only heard it once. I also don't know what the drivers are mad out of.SS won't be a problem because their copper wired and apparently sold as all rounders. Still, I would say they're better with SET or Tubes or "soft" SS - lower DF - lower feedback types.
But they sound really nice with Trends Audio Class T amps - under $200. Good sound can be had on the cheap - just have to turn over the rocks to find it.
Do your best to try the AX Two - if there is a better speaker of any design under $1k I have yet to hear it. And most in the $2k range are in serious trouble - and I say most I mean "most"
I am running an Audio Space Mini-2 EL 34 in Triode on them as I type this. Just try them. Good ol boring paper woofers LOL soft dome tweeter in a "pseudo" horn "pseudo" transmission line. Then listen to a $5000 B&W 805S. Embarrassing really.

Don't hold me to it, but I think the following have paper drivers:
Rega speakers
Usher 601/602 series
Linn Majik
Reynaud, certain models???
Some are beyond your budget new, but you never know what you can find used.

No wonder last year I picked the Linn Majik as the best sounding from among 4 speakers my friend was auditioning with me. There was a difference, perhaps explains the foot tapping quality of the Linn. Thanks for the suggestions.

Paper cone speakers seem to produce a very natural tone. See Stereophile July 2012 for the new DALI Zensor 1 $475/pair.
Yet to receive the July issue. Will audition.
Thanks.
