I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I have inherited my father's Dynaco MK III monobclocks and and PAS preamp. They have already had some upgrades done to them, and are probably as good sounding as I need them to be, at least for a while.
Here's my question: What might you recommend for speakers to go with them? I could spend up to $2500, but of course wouldn't mind spending less.(Or, more accurately, my WIFE wouldn't mind me spending less). Used is also certainly an option, and since I live in a fairly large city (Portland, OR), a variety of used gear does show up from time to time.
A friend recommended I check out Wilson Audio, which I certainly will, but any other suggestions would be appreciated, too.
Thanks!
Follow Ups:
and search out a pair of Carl Marchisoto's speakers specifically designed to exploit the virtues of low/medium powered tube amps and that would be the Alon Lotus SE with the 14 ohm woofer option.
These may be difficult to find but the reasons are solid and that is they have long been out of production and those fortunate ones that own them are relunctant or unwilling to part with them. I'm listening to a pair of the MK ll versions powered by an rebuilt EICO 2050 right now and there is very little that could be characterized as faults, certainly not musically!!
Good luck in your search,
~
Vintage Snells. I'm sure you can find something to do with the extra 2 grand!
I second the Snell recommendation. I used a pair of Van Alstine modded Dynaco IIIs on Snell As for several years... a great combination. I did bi-amp the woofer with an Audire most of the time to improve dynamics, but it wasn't really mandatory.
...
I'm using them with a restored Scott LK72b and it's a match made in heaven. At $1000 they are a steal.
I've heard very positive things about the Lore and its little brother the M-lore. I listened to the Lore for an unfortunately short time, but came away impressed.
On a negative note I've also heard that Tekton is having a difficult time meeting its completion and shipping commitments. In other words, they aren't getting them out the door as promised. Or is this just a nasty rumor? I didn't post this to stir up trouble. I'm seriously interested in ordering a pair, but I don't want my time wasted by endless unfulfilled ship dates, excuses, etc.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
It took around 3 weeks from the time I placed the order until they were shipped. I made one inquiry about shipping and they were shipped when he said they would be. No runarounds or excuses. It was well worth the wait.
Thanks! I'll give Eric a call on Tuesday.
I had Will Vincent MKIII's hooked up to Green Mountain Europa Max's. The combo was killer IMHO. They are about $1000 for the Europa Max's if you can find them. The Rio's would work in your price range as well.
Vandersteen's current model 2 is easy to drive with Dynaco's. At your price point.
I have used a modded Stereo 70 from Will Vincent and modded mono Mark 4's from another builder with great results.
Some of the best speakers that I've listened to in that price range would have to be Joseph Audio. I'm more impressed with them than I am with Wilson Audio speakers. The Joseph Audio speakers work really well with tubed electronics.
I can't make a specific recomendation except to say I would go with a speaker from the same era as the Dynaco amps. The speakers from that era were designed for the tube amps of that era......
Go Vintage.
What kind of music do you listen to?
You can get a pait=rof pioneer HPM 100s for under $500
Vintage ADS: 710, 810 or 910. Portland has a good supply, check craigslist.
For under $1000 and do the recomended tweeks (cork the horns and update the caps on the x-over) You will be floored. They are dynamic, have punch, very good imaging and clarity (Placement counts) I had a pr with a modded dynaco ST70 and it was magic....
I used a rebuilt Thorens and a bottlehead preamp
This was my basement system and I enjoyed it as much as my 30K upstairs system
I had and think the Dynaco Pre should be either modded or ditched. The Bottlehead foreplay III was about $350 and was a much better preamp for the dynaco amps. Their is lots of good used gear out there. Find the used cornwalls or Klipschhorns and get a new preamp and you will be very happy
If you are going to ditch the preamp let me know. I could make use of it.
If you want to go the Cornwall route, I would really recommend you go the Bob Crites route. This version is head and shoulders above the Klipsch version. He even offers the enclosure (but you will need to assemble it yourself, but that's easy). It will run well under your budget. This combo will last you the rest of your life, with no feeling that you are missing anything. The Selenium D405 driver is great, and far better than the screechy Klipsch setup.
Does Wilson Audio make a speaker that sells for $2500 a pair?
I recently listened to a pair of B&W PM1 speakers and I liked what I heard. They retail for $2800 a pair, but you can probably get them for $2500 if you talk real nice. ;-)
I just bought a pair from my local B&W dealer and they should be in next week. You might want to go listen to them. I was impressed.
Good luck,
John Elison
Dramatic looking. Enjoy!
