I am trying to buy a pair of Dunlavy SC-IV/A but all I have seen for sale are the SC-IV or the SC-IV Signature and not the SC-IV/A.
Are the SC-IV/A really that good that the owners just wanted to keep them for life? :)
Can anybody give me your opinions on the sound difference if you have experiences on both modals?
Thanks,
Rocky

Do you still have it for sale?
In the category of "an abundance of caution", I'm aware of a guy, coincidentally in Arizona, who claimed to have a nice trumpet for sale, when in fact, he did not have it. He even posted photos - that he got from another site! He ripped off a buyer (not me) for the asking price and dropped out of sight.
I don't know anything about this guy "Arizona", and he may be perfectly legit, but it would be worth verifying the details before sending money, especially since he's not a registered inmate, and apparently hasn't posted since then. Just sayin'.
:)
Thanks for the notice.

The Dunlavy speakers I've heard were always very musical.
...is specializing in repairs of Dunlavy speakers? I don't need it now, but down the road I bet I'd be interested in having mine restored rather than replaced.

I've been out of the audiophile seen for a while and I just came across this site just now. What timing! To get to the point I have a pair of IV/A's and yes I will hold onto them for my dear life!!! The hard part was convincing my wife to let me keep them after I got married. I have a small house and my wife thinks the speakers are ugly. The only place I can place them is in the front room. I convinced my wife to respect them by saying it's an investment. I feel these speakers if kept in excellent condition will never depreciate and possible slightly appreciate like in my case since I bought them second hand at a steal 6 years ago.
On a different note, my friend had the V's and we did a side by side comparison with the IV/A's which I believe not many have had the opportunity to do. I would have to say the sound difference is there but extremely marginal especially if you consider the size difference. Not everyone can house the V's in their home while maintaining proper acoustic.
Anyhow, I hope you all enjoy the picks and please ignore the McIntosh speaker to the far left LOL!
Hey man, thanks for the photo. This is so cool!
I have just purchased a pair of the used SC-4 from a dealer in OH. The speakers are traded in from a previous owner toward a pair of new Wilson Sophia 3. This pair of SC-4s are in excellence condition with their original boxes. I paid less then $2K for them. I think it's a good deal but they are in black oak finish and I hate oak finish and black color! But considering the price, I will try to live with them. I have just rearrange the audio room last weekend and hopefully I can move in the SC-4 sometime this week.
I will try to post some photos of the speakers after I set them up.
Fortunately my wife loves the sound of my system, using the huge Dunlavy SCIVs or the Fulton Js, which look like a huge black refrigerator, and lets me position them wherever I want!
Here's another pick to show you the size of the V's...but then I'm short...I scale in at a whopping 5'6"! LOL!

I have been using the Dunlavy SCIV speakers, along with my Fulton Js for decades. The Dunlavy SCIV measured as well or better than anything JA has EVER measured: flat response, perfect square wave, time coherent, efficient. NOTHING I heard at the 2010 or 2011 CAS shows equalled the SCIVs in accuracy.
Hi the old school,
Which version of the SC-4 do you have? The original with Morel woofers, the Signature with Vifa woofers or the SC-4A with the Scan Speak woofers?
Rocky
I have the Signatures. When JA tested them, they measured as well or better than any speaker. The A's are brighter than the Signatures, but some rugs can cure that.
Old School,
Dude, no one is saying your IVs are not accurate or measure any worse than others speakers...hell they even made product of the year in Stereophile one year(that literally almost put John out of business - as he couldn't keep up with demand fast enough - his words not mine)...but moving up the Dunlavy ladder there are noticeable differences.
I even once ran into a guy that swore his Dunlavy IIs w/ a quality sub were the purist reproduction of music he had ever heard.
Conclusion - John made some great speakers, all of them for that matter!
Just trying to help the OP's question: I think the SCIV superior to the SCIVa. I suspect the vastly bigger, vastly more expensive, SCV and SCVI superior to the SCIV. If you think every new incarnation of a product is superior to the older one, you are a fool. Just another reason why I favor blind tests.
Old School -Sound is subjective, that was the point of my posts.
The IVA was made with upgraded parts, does it sound better(?), does it sound different, yes, do they command a higher resale value, yes! Stereophile did reviews on both, I suggest the OP try to read both if he cannot have a "blind test" auditioning both side by side.
Re; "If you think every new incarnation of a product is superior to the older one, you are a fool." - Nope I don't, but in John Dunlavy's case I would suspect knowing the guy like I did, he did believe it was.

My IVs Signatures are for sale here. Stereophile has reviews of both. As usual, you must have a good system to hear what difference(s) exist. I recall that the tweeters woofers and therefore the crossover was changed but the woofer made what difference was perceptible. There is very little difference in the speakers because the design is the same and they differ only in (essentially trivial) detail that made a very small difference.
Yes, this is my point: there is very little difference between the SCIV and the SCIVa I prefer the SCIV OVER the supposedly improved SCIVa, but the difference is extremely small.

Yes, from what I've talked with others as well, we love our IV-A's and find them hard to part with. But everyone has their price. In my case it'd be much more than half retail as I'm not in dire straits, and they really have added a lot of enjoyment to my life the last decade or so. If you can wait around till someone does decide to sell, they might be in a position to need to sell them for some crazy price like $3,000.

If you don't mind a little bit a advise. I use to own the 4As, a very nice speaker indeed but if you can't easily find the A version, I would highly recommend a V over a IV. They were made in greater numbers and are way way way better!
I would agree that the SC-V is a better speaker than the SC-IV (I own the SC-IV Signatures), but only if the listening room is sufficiently large enough to support the SC-V's. If not, the SC-IV's will then sound better.
I say this because back when I was buying the Dunlavy Speakers, I had it in my head that I wanted the SC-V's as I had auditioned them in the dealer's showroom and fell in love with them. However, I personally talked with John Dunlavy prior to me purchasing my speakers and he said based on my sized room, the SC-IV's would outperform the SC-V's because my room was too small to support the V's.
I love my SC-IV Sigs and do not plan on ever selling them! I have never found a speaker that has been as musically/tonally right and complete/balanced as these.
Warmest regards,
No Regrets
Hi Mr_bill2,
No, I can't find a pair of V neither. However, I have found a pair of VI! But this is too big and way too heavy for my listening room, weighting over 500lb each! I am worry that the wood foundation in my listening room might not be able to support them. :(
By the way, anybody know what is the fair price for the IV/A, V and the VI?
Rocky
Hi Rocky,Yeah VIs are crazy big, personally can't figure out why John ever made them except maybe for professional theater applications.
Back to the Vs, heard them one year at the SanFran CES show, John had them bi-amped with tubed BATs all around and playing Tin Pan Alley by Stevie Ray on vinyl, they sounded magnificent!! I ended up some years later buying IVAs but never really got over the sound I heard from the Vs.
In terms of resale pricing, start at 1/2 retail and work down is my guess and don't forget these are not easy to ship so sellers when ready will be pretty motivated.
Good luck with the hunt & all the best,
Bill
