I think this has been addressed but can't find it. I have a pair of KEF 104.2s that I've enjoyed for more than a decade, but I think the 107s and 107.2s are more handsome and may be easier to integrate into my room, because of their rotating mid and HF drivers. Has anyone compared the sound of either the 107s or 107.2s with the 104.2s?

Hi i would try to trace and listen also the 105.2
A friend of mine owns the original 105 ... great image indeed
Maybe the bass is a little rounded but the overall sound is very good indeed
The 105.2 i have the feeling shoud be a refined version of the original
Of the models you mention i do not like the woofers placement
But it is personal
Kind regards,
bg

I have had a pair of 107/2s since they came out... some time in the early 90s. I auditioned them against the original 107s, and 104s (as well as several competitors from other companies), and came away decidedly preferring the 107/2s... so I bought them! They are the only dynamic speakers that have stayed with me all these years (only my ESL63s have seen as much use). Yes, I've replaced the surrounds, but I consider that "normal wear". They have the best real world base, I've been able to reproduce in my home, and their imaging & depth of sound stage is extraordinary... the Quads do have better "depth", mid range detail, and "air", but that KEFs are my first choice for most general listening, and anything really dynamic. I don't think there's much out there that can keep up under $10k, so I'm sticking with my 107s!

IMO the IO4/2's sound better but unfortunately the foam used on the bass units deterioates, I have just sold a pair of IO4/2 for £575 on behalf of my brother because he now only watches TV. I would have kept them but for the bass unit problem well known. I used to have the IO7/2 and virtually every KEF speaker as I knew the founder the late Raymond Cooke and was able to obtain his speakers direct from the factory. I do not care for present day KEF speakers same name entirely different Co.

Had the 104.2s then Reference 3 then the 107s back in 94-96. The 107s were by far the favorite but I couldn't get enough bass with my Adcom gf545. Looking back I'm sure that the amp was the trouble, I needed more power to bring the woofers alive. I think the 104.2 had 8" woofers and the 107s had a 10", but its been awhile. The 107s better the 104.2 in all areas and had some of the spookiest imagining I had heard. Some of the cleanest sound ever. The room they were in was not as big as I'd of liked but I don't think it hindered them at all. I would love to hear them again with a higher powered amp. Ironically the first thing I did after I sold them was buy a Mcintosh 300 watt amp...guess I should of waited to sell them.
"that there Clarks an RRRR VVVV....don't get too attached...we're taking it with us when leave next month..."
Back in the day I recall seeing the 102.5, 103.5, 104.5, & 107.5 all lined up; a beautiful sight. The 104.5 was probably the 1st audio speaker that I ever lusted after. As I recall, I think they were being driven by the Forte Amp (Stasis?). I remember being floored with what I had heard.
The Forte was Threshold's economy model, it was not a Stasis amp and used the same output devices as the Robertson amp I believe. BTW, I have heard a lot about the Robertson amps sounding differently from one another. They had capacitors on the outputs, connecting to the binding posts. Bypass those with .1uF Teflon caps and you'll have one heck of a great sounding amp. Jon Soderburg says he can make the old Forte amps sing as well, though he may have been using Black Gate caps to do it... If I had a Forte and wanted to move up in found quality I'd talk to Jon first!
Best Regards,
Lou
