Just purchased a new pair of Focal Chorus 706V speakers. I am living in temporary housing so my survival gear is a Dynaco PAS3 (with the VTV Upgrade Kit) and an ST-35, new boards and parts with JJ EL84's and 12DW7's.
The Focals are a good value for the money spent. They are excellent top to upper bass.
After I did some listening around I decided that a decent bookshelf on some 24" Lovan stands would get me over the withdrawal symptoms until I move into a permanent home.
Give these speakers a listen and let me know what you hear......

Here's the pic of my survival setup.....
Wonderful setup.I can imagine beautiful sound emnating from those Focals.I have the 706V in my shortlist for my next purchase. How did it fare against speakers in the same price zone in your auditioning?
Just curious what speaker wire you are using. Some fellow inmates have cables which look like Anaconda.
Best Wishes

Hi!!
Thanks for asking me about the Focal's and my current setup.
The speaker cables that I am using are QED Silver Anniversary. Picked these up in Stockholm some years back in a very nice Hi-Fi store in Slussen on Gotgatan.
The QED cables are marvelous.
I have compared them to several different one's I own and apart from the Zu IBIS that seem to delineate the details better and is in a major price leage difference range, the QED cables blow the Monster XP's that I consider a good budget cable. And the QED's were not expensive
The other speakers I heard were a pair or Rega's RS1 that sounded very neutral and clear, but the bass screamed "subwoofer please"
Also heard a pair of Dali Lektor 3 and apart from the elegant presentation I almost decided in favor of a pair, they sounded slightly dry to my ears.
I also heard a pair of B&W 685's that blew me away but the Focal's drew me closer to the music... so I bit the bullet and bought the Focals.
Was very lucky to have a Focal dealer 1 hour's drive in Salem VA and I always try to buy my equipment from local dealers as I try my best to support them with making the sale.
They happened to have a new in the box 706V in Black that matched my Lovan stands very well.
Once I get my stuff out of storage in Spring when I finally move into a house, the Focal's will be taken for a spin with my Atmasphere M60's to see how they get along.
The manual for the 706's claims 20 hour break-in but I have not stopped smiling since I pushed play a week ago.
I guess I can eliminate B&W from my short list. Thanks for the comments.I had the Lektor also in consideration.I am checking out PSB Image 6 next week.

Best audition as many as you can and take your CD's so that the music is familiar.
Right now I am listening to some Leonard Cohen through the Focal 806V.
His voice is amazingly as textured as I heard it at the RMAF 2007.
This was through Kara Chaffe GM70 SE amps and some Wilson Benesh speakers w/Radial SW.
OK maybe not as refined...
Heck my Dynaco PAS3 and ST-35 really get the job done!
I just got a Marantz BD7004 I stole for $299!
This player makes a big difference from my Sony Best Buy budget DVD player.
Anyhow, the Focals are amazing.
They make floor standing sound in a stand mounted form factor.
Good Luck
So right.... this 'lean' period in my life has brought a certain peace to my musical soul.
Devoid of my dozens of pieces of equipment, the minimalist excursion has me experimenting with new music from Barnes and Noble & Fye.
Madeleine Peyroux and Bill Douglas among the new vibes. Also Ryan Farish to smooth the environment.
The Focals have a way of projecting the music unlike any speaker I have owned. They are voiced in an elegant manner, and the bass is lush, never lacking.
For a pair of small speakers the price was very good value.
I had a chance to buy the 800 series, but the extra $300 was mostly cosmetic, the DNA mostly un-changed.
