The background hiss issue is a couple of years old, from what I know Event addressed that sometime in 2009. Mine are dead quiet, unless you place your good ear right up against the tweeter and concentrate real hard. I've never heard of hum being an issue with the Opals.
I did not hear the Dynaudio BM6a, but have listened to the BM15a, I used to work at a Dynaudio dealership. Never liked the sound of Dynaudios, don't like the way they soften and smear the vowels and consonants of music. They always reminded me of the "filtered" sound you get from Philips classical recordings from the 70's and 80's. If I were looking for a smaller, lighter speaker around $1500-1800 I'd look seriously at the Klein & Hummel, er, Neumann O110. I owned the O410's before moving apartments and buying the Opals (the O410's were just too much for the new, smaller apartment) and the K&H are terrific speakers.

Thanks for your info. My thoughts are that Dynaudio improved their performance as far as coherence when they changed to the 6 db/octave crossovers in their 6aII compared to their earlier model 6a's which have high slope crossovers. Perhaps that was part of the problem you described with their older model 15a, as well.
I have older PSB speakers with high slope crossovers and if I listen critically I can notice the phasiness or smearing that you mention.
As far as Klein and Hummel or Neumann, I am familiar with the names, but that is all. This is really my first exploration into professional gear, so I will check them out.
To my ears the 'smearing' with DynaudioAcoustics is due to the shallow crossover slopes.
It is not apparent to me with monitors using the standard 24dB L-R slopes as they are in phase and have a better transient response than shallower alternatives (incl Dynaudios older12/6 and current 6/6 lp/hp versions).
The only speakers which get away with using low order slopes I have heard were co-axials.
And what is your standard of performance in "non smearing" speakers in the $1500 to $3000 per speaker pair active category?
The ones I heard: BM5, BM6. I very much preferred their BM15.
Since I got a set of rather large active 4way full-range monitors I have not very much interest in the $1.5k-3k range anymore.
