They would be a Biamped speaker... Otherwise, I like the connectivity on the rear.... especially the aux power plug, and Sub outs.
Follow Ups:
I first heard them at RMAF 2008. I was shocked at how good they sounded and even the smaller A2 sounded like music. This year, their room did not impress me at all.
they opened one up whole I was there this year. The one with the amplifiers has a huge power transformer. The parts inside looked very good for the factory direct asking price.
Compared to what Guitar Center sells, this is a 600.00 retail pair of speakers. You will get a lot more volume for this price, But I think the Audioengine speakers will sound better at low to moderate volume. These are very musical, low offense speakers.
Listening to these convinced me to try actives again. My last pair was a pair of the AR Powered Partners back in 1987. Keep them for at least 10 years. They were not any better than the A5's.

But assuming the PS is the same - one transformer. Extra amps for tweeters is about the same price as a decent passive crossover ~$30.
Right- they are not really "active"- they are "self-powered" with an onboard amplifier that powers both drivers through a passive XO. That is my understanding at least.
I think most audiophiles would be shocked if they went down to their local pro audio shops and saw what $350 can do. But that will never happen.
We need a shootout with AudioEngine, KRK and Mackie and ??
They have biamped, mono solutions at similar retail prices.
