I would like to start by saying hello. I'm a fairly new inmate who has been lurking in the vinyl asylum mostly.
I am refurb'ing a Golden Tube SE 40 and need speakers. I am between open baffle or frugal horn. Not sure whether I will buy or build yet, as building has quite an appeal. Also, I am certain I don't want a pair of giant speakers in my room. I have been looking hard at Tekton OB and also at the Metronome Horn design.
Any opinions would be great to help me weigh my decision. Obviously, I need to let my ears do some deciding as well. Please, don't try to convince me against either of these or use this as a chance to argue. Constructive help is what I'm after...
Thanks in advance, Chubbs

thanks. cant say i have heard the frugals. not too fond of blh
in general; don't like the delayed bass.
love the M J King open baffle with the alpha 15a woofer and the fostex
103 mid/tweeter, although I don't like how far away one must get from
them in order to get the treble and bass together with ea. other. OB
speakers must be 3 ft. out from the wall, and so if you are firing across
the room you aren't going to have much room behind you and you will be
very close to the speakers.
are those a25 that you have? I have made a very good system with 2pr
of a25. rather than stacking them, I have cut out the back middle of
one speaker and bolted another a25 behind it (with a rubber seal in between). wired for 4 ohm now, and not good with tubes. the aperodic port
is blocked from the back with a piece of wood glued in.
the tweeters are disconnected and i have a sm. fostex speakers (fe164, but you could use something else0 in small
plywood frames on top of the dynacos, OB style, back a couple of inches for time alignment. they are fed with a 13 uF cap. This fostex is driven by an integrated tube amp, from the 8 ohm tap.
these speakers will not go loud, but the bass is much better and lower than with a single a25. not boomy liked stacked pairs the treble is
much better than the stock a25 too.
i actually like setting the vol. independently on the two speakers.
it is not the pain one would think it would be. i have had many compliments on this implementation and it is my best box speaker so far.
all of that said, i shall go back to OB.
Yes, I have found the Dyna's to be power whores. I've pretty much ruled them out. I think OB is where I will start. I can try a DIY project for next to nothing to see if it's for me or not. have you checked out the metronome frugal design? My wife loves the look...

yes the dynas are hogs, but sure seem more efficient once they
are used in the manner in which i do , on acct. of having more/deeper
bass.
the metronomes are to be VERY good with tubes, i bet you will like them.
maybe in your price range , use fe167e drivers.
in any case let us know what you think with the results.
tell us a little more
how big is the room/ how loudly do you listen/how low would you
like the speakers to go.
Thanks mor, sorry about that. Thanks for your interest! My room is approx 20 * 25. It's comprised of carpeting, drywall and a drop ceiling (absorbant paneling). I have done some amateur, DIY acoustic treatment. I have absorbant paneling for the rear and adjascent walls. I also have 6 DIY bass traps, 4 for the corners and 2 at the middle of the long walls. It doubles as a jam room, play room and audio room. I have tried to picture this for you. I have taken each half of the room and a view from my listening seat. I have 2 seperate power lines running directly from my box. One for digital and one for analog.
I am a bass player and amateur musician. I have a keen ear and plan to keep it that way so lower volumes is where I tend to listen. Also, I have a young family, 3 year and 6 mo. old so someone is always napping, including me! LOL.
I am a rock and jazz type, however, everything else short of country and classical is in the mix. Lately, I can't get enough of Herbie Hancock. I am also a devoted analog-head. My TT spins daily and for this system I am building, it will be vinyl only. I have a dedicated power line direct from my box for this also. No digital at all!!
These are some of the choices I have had on the table:
Klipsch RB-61, new
Klipsch LaScala, used $400
Klipsch Heresy 1, 4 ohm, used $200
Tekton model 6.5, new
Tekton Open Baffle, new
DIY frugal horn, Metronome design
DIY Open baffle, several design considerationsBudget for new speakers can't be more than $800 CDN funds, all in.

i have heard the heresy, and liked it alot. it wont sound anything like
your dynacos though.
i have often thought that a heresy could be gutted and made into an ob,
bass, mid, treble, and xover on a big piece of ply. an active alpha 15 on the bottom .
the best klipsch is the forte 1. i like it better than the cornwall 1 (which i had).
good luck . email me if you want pics of the double dynacos.
