HiI'd love to try out the MG12s but fear my amps may not be powerful enough... I have an MC7R pre with mc845 power monos (20W but powerful...) Am I dreaming to think this tube combo could make the mG12s sing?? Anyone with a similar low-power set up?
Thanks for your help

To add my voice to the chorus, I've read that Magnepans require a high current amp. It isn't a matter of absolute watts, though, all other things being equal, high wattage amps will have higher current delivery. The key is to find someone who understands the engineering angle and can help you pick an amp. It doesn't have to be super expensive. One audio expert said the best possible cheap system you can put together is a pair of maggies and a good high-current receiver. Maybe that is something you could pick up on ebay, because there were some genuine high end receivers built back in the day by Yamaha, HK, and others. Your present amps might work so long as you are content with modest volume levels - again, its current, not watts.
Hmmm? 20wpc. Of course there's nothing stopping from giving it try, and may as well, but 20wpc is gonna be a bit skimpy.
In my experience with Maggies, starting with new MG-IIBs bought back in the day, to my current MMGs and 1.6QRs, I don't feel that they need boatloads of power.
Close to Sebrof's comments, I've used them with as little at 35wpc, and as much as 400+wpc, and found as little as 70-100wpc to do a good job with the models I just mentioned/have had ownership experience with. I've also used them most often with tubed amps with excellent results, but have also enjoyed them powered by transistor amps, too (the last amp being an Odyssey Stratos, which I thought was excellent and worked very nicely with the 1.6QRs).

I had MG12s in a spare bedroom powered by a 50 watt Jolida integrated (JD 302). It was powerful enough most of the time except when I wanted to crank it a little, so I sold it for a more powerful amp. You'd probably enjoy the heck out of the combo for late nighters if you play low in a small room. the rest of the time you'd probably be wanting for more power.
Yes, definitely.
Magnepans really need in the 100s of watts to sound good . . . unless you have a small room and don't like to listen loud. Then, maybe 100 will do.
Seriously, they're quite inefficient.
Most tube amps, even 845s, sound best with high load impedances. Maggies are 4 ohms and do require a low output impedance to give best performance. Connecting Maggies directly to your amps will likely make them sound strained. Speltz ZERO autotransformers would help with the impedance matching, but do nothing for the low power.
20 watts is too little power to drive Maggies to normal levels with most music.
Maggies need high power and high current amps to work
