I want to upgrade my speakers which are Paradigm Monitor 20’s and a Paradigm center from the same series.
The attached photo shows the present arrangement. The fireplace and window walls are about 22 feet long. The narrow part of the room opposite the bookcase is about 12 feet wide. There is a SVS sub on the right side under the switch plate.
The use is 50% video and 50% music all acoustic classic.
I originally wanted planers but I am told that in my room they will not work
Without spending a fortune I would like to make a meaningful upgrade. Any suggestions are welcome.

Sorry Sailnut,
From the picture I can tell that your music system has very low priority. You could get a substantial improvement by just rearranging the room. Until then I would not upgrade.
Thanx, Russ
I see the corner of a wall opposite the bookcase... Is this an "L" shaped room? If both sides of the "L" are open areas then I would probably consider diagonal listening, with the speakers triangulated against the corner behind the rocking chair. A diagonal listening scheme would put your listening chair near that corner across from the bookcase. This unusual listening scheme might seem kinda weird at first but I can't imagine many other ways I would position speakers in that room - especially if the speakers are dipole planars like Magnepans. But, I would consider speakers that like to be placed near walls or corners rather than big planars if I were you.
I would say that you definitely need to rearrange the room, as it stands you won't get the best sound no matter what you put in there. Now, may I suggest you start by getting rid of the Eames recliner and sending it to me. I feel that sending it my way would enable you to have the best sound you've ever experienced.
The music matters more than the equipment!
I don't see why planars wouldn't work well in that room if you are willing to move them well away from the front wall.
The majority seem to feel they are to close to the windowed wall.
The distance from that wall to the speaker is about 6 feet. The hireplace wall itself is about 23 feet wide. The speaker face is out about 3 feet from that wall. The equipment cabinet is totaly open no reflection issues. Of course the TV with its glass screen is very reflective.
I am using Audessy equalization and from the lounge chair the sound is very clean and free from obvious peaks.
I agree with the others; if you want to *upgrade* the sound, you 1st need to re-arrange the room & speaker placement.

With the way your room is set up you may as well use a cheap HT setup. You need to use that room to maximize what you can hear. The long wall will work better. If you plan on leaving your room that qay dont upgrade. What electronics are you using.
couldn't agree more....

Joel
I feel the system should be on the left wall. And move the desk away from there and have the sofa on right near the window. The right corner would then be free for proper furniture arrangement. In any case I feel the present location of the speakers must change.Just my opinion. There could be better ideas from fellow inmates.
I would utilize the wall where the bookcase is - meaning that it has to go elsewhere. The stereo rack moved closer to the fireplace near the window. You'd have a lot more to work with. Just my opinion.
