The foot print is identical to the Model 5A but the 7 weighs in at 12 pounds less. I will most definitely seek out a listen

Possible reason for less weight, its carbon foot print.
"Five Layered Carbon Fiber constrained
layered damped panels bonded to a Carbon
Fiber skeletal structure."
The finish is paint.

Very interesting. ..It's hard to imagine that they're improvement over the 5A's justifies twice the price. ..But rest assured they sound great and represent something of a value at their price point when compared with other $30k speakers for Richard Vandersteen makes great speakers.
I can't believe there is nothing on their website about them (and ughh! what an awful website!).
Is that impedance minimum .5 ohm?

Keep your ears honest: Listen to live, unamplified music every week.
...the impedance varies between 8 Ohms to 3.5 Ohms (4 Ohms nominal, 8 Ohms Max, 3.5 Ohms Min).
Robert Harley has it right.

at this speaker for some time now, but of course not to the open press. It should be remembered that Vandersteen has had some interesting ideas and patents on driver design in the past, including a patent, IIRC, on the cross sectional profile of a vented pole piece. The article mentions one aspect of his latest design: a carbon fiber/balsa sandwich material for the cone structure. It is rumored to be the equivalent of the extremely costly diamond tweeter and midrange units made and used by other companies, but with the equivalent stiffness applied even to a woofer.
IIRC, the break up resonances on the diamond drivers are extremely high and I believe Vandersteen's goal was to emulate such performance in all the drivers of his new designs. If the speaker was playing at CES, it would be interesting to hear the preliminary reports of its sound (at least more than the simple blurb in the article).

The 7s are $45K a pair and were introduced at CES.
