I am trying to help a friend select speakers for a home theater system. He only has about $800 ($1,000 max) for speakers, stands, cables and receiver. He just bought a good plasma TV and Sony Playstation 3 for playing Blue-Ray discs, etc. I figure about $300 for the receiver so probably looking around $600 max for speakers. My first thought was buying used B&W (DM302) or NHT (zero/super zero) speakers, but may take a while to come up with five matching speakers and then still need a sub. I was considering the HSU Performance 2 package with the STF-2 Sub and Ventriloquest speakers (has anybody heard this?), but really want the five matching speakers to go into the 50-60Hz range for crossing over to a sub. I know with this budget it is challenging. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks,
Scott

Consider a Panasonic digital amp HT received around $300 and getting and entire M&K speakers off ebay or audiogon. They are great speakers for HT, do well on music (especially rock) and have great subs. I think you could even meet the budget target.
Aural Ecstasy 805 SD piano black, and 4 of these with a sub would certainly do well in that budget range. They usually go in the $100-200 range a pr.
I felt they never fully got broken in despite a good effort on my part, and sold them. There was an auction on ebay for 4 from an Oregon consignment type place, looked very good. And the sub is always being sold at a discount.
Unfortunately, I don't think he can get more new, so you have to go used.
Pic above is one of mine, office system, and 2nd pic is from auction (below).
In light of that, I agree with trying to get Infinity or Polk or Mission E series or something like that.
My uncle has the Hsu package but hasn't used them, and I've not heard them.

typically available at Circuit City and Crutchfield. I have owned and therefore heard them and they are OK. Should do fine in this application.

My neighbor was in a similar situation not too long ago and got these. I was prepared to be unimpressed but came away pleasantly surprised. If his space isn't huge - these do very well for the money.
$549, shipped from B&H online (a very reputable company if you've not ordered from them before). They don't stock them, so it's a special order item - took about a week to get them.
I have some used but good KEF stuff in excellent condition. Write to me if interested.
Could you please advise the Model number of the KEF speakers.
Thanks,
Scott
Has he heard Cambridge SoundWorks, Polk, or Infinity bookshelf speakers? Those may well fit into his budget,Alan

same guys who make the famous Insignia speakers?
I have heard the Infinity 1000 system.A better option may be Infinity 362 and 162 or 152 combination.362 and 162 are very good speakers,in my opinion.
The Insignia name is used for products that can be imported cheaply from a number of factories. It's similar to the way the Realistic/Optimus house brand used to be applied.

Yes, Realistic, I have four 8omhs, Heavy 2 black, two silver Bookshelf speakers, Ratshack, they now sell KLH speakers the same way.

Chinese White Van stuff. Are there strict quality control measures? The toys, milk et al, I would be weary.
Hopefully they've got some minimum standards.
Ok guys, I got my 500 watt Insignia Amp at best buy 7 years ago, upgraded the interconnects & speakers via Radio Shack & audiophile friends, my sub is Cambridge SoundWorks, Center also, Fronts are Infinity 1001's and my surrounds are KLH Pro 6. That receiver has a bass boost that is very nice, it also plays DVD-A. Not bad for Less than $150.00 Cheers!
