Perhaps this is a better place to post this question. I have an Art Audio Jota BXLS amp in need of a pair of speakers in order to elevate it from door stopper status. It's a shame not to be using this amp and so I'm in the market for a pair. There are plenty of nice speakers in the 87-90db range to choose from but do I need a more sensitive speaker to bring out the best qualities in this amp or will an 87-90db speaker be fine?
Either a bookshelf or floorstander is Ok. I can live with either type. I've considered the Sonus Faber Cremona Auditors (love the craftsmanship and cabinetry on the Sonus line). Others, in the running are the Krell Resolution 3, Sonus Faber Grand Piano, Reference 3A DeCapo.
I'll be using these in a medium sized room with a Art Audio VP1 tube preamp a CD player and probably vinyl later on.
What speakers would you choose with a maximum budget of $3300 and I'm open to the used market. Appreciate any suggestions.
Follow Ups:
Duke LeJune who post here often builds some very fine sounding speakers.
I really enjoyed his new Audio Kinesis Bi-polar design that I listened to at RMAF.
I think his Bi-polar speakers can be configurd with a 16 ohm impedance. And have around a 92db to 93db 1-W/1-M efficency. Duke was playing music through an Atmas-Phere 30 watt OTL amp obtaining great dynamics and clear musical characteristics with this combination.
There is no reason why you could not easily obtain the same results with your 20 watt 300B amplifier as well.
Send Duke an email, he is very easy to talk with. And he is really nice guy too.
Good luck in your search!

I suggest you call Art Audio and ask their advice. Who knows better? Good luck!
The 300BXLS won't output 24 watts (closer to 20), but a medium sensitivity speaker in the 88-91db/w range (preferably with a flat impedance curve) will be more work just fine. I have two Jotas. The monoblock pair (with 520B) drives a pair of Merlin VSMs, and the stereo Jota (with 300BXLS) drives JM Reynauld Offrandes (no preamp used in this system). Both have plenty of juice to drive either speakers in medium sized rooms.
Try to find used Coincident speakers
As you may know, 300B amps like high/benign impedance loads with the emphasis on benign whether they are single ended, PP or parallel.
Taxing a 300B amp with low impedance dips and average efficiency speakers will mitigate the "magical" qualities that the venerable 300B tubes are capable of delivering.
I had excellent results with a GS 300B/WE SE amp and Cabasse Farella 401 speakers. This was one of THE most musical systems I have ever put together to date although I must divulge that a sub was used via electronic x-over @ 68hz/36db octave thus relieving the 300B from low bass duties.
My advice, keep the efficiency of the speakers above 94db and definately keep a close eye on the impedance undulations so as not to tax the amp.
Cheers
nor a 94db.+ efficiency speakers is needed for Jota. The Jota has a bit more grunt in that the speaker choices are wider than a typical 300B amplifier. ( But yes. It's still load sensitive )
Sometimes, I can get away with even a tougher load with standmounts or smallish 2 way floorstanders. ( smaller and less drivers to control, I suppose )
My point was that one would not want to push the headroom of a 300B design, whether it be SE, PP or parallel as that degrades the "magic" but hey...to each is own :-)
There is nothing like a SE 300B in full undistorted song that makes the heart leap with joy! Ask me how i know this...
I agree that 300B's has the magic midrange. And a few I have heard even had an excellent bass agility.
I probably don't mind using one if I can find a decent speakers for them to shine. Many would meet the *number* requirements, but often, they are not the kind of speakers I can live with.
"Many would meet the *number* requirements, but often, they are not the kind of speakers I can live with."
Ah, my point exactly!! The Cabasse Ferrella 401's were a direct radiating speaker with the efficiency and the sonic goods to allow the SE 300B to achieve full song :-)
Many moons ago, I've tried their standmounts with Jotas. (silly, eh ? )
Even with the mono blocks, I didn't think it was a successful pairing.
I have heard a Jota driving the De Cappo. It was lovely. They should do well in a smallish size room. ( they don't go low )
SF speakers are beautiful. I haven't heard them with the Jotas, tho.
Here's an odd ball reco.
My absolute favourite under 4k$ with Jotas so far is the Naim Allaes.
Their sensitivity is at 88db. but their impedance is minimum 6 ohms and they do not have a nasty peak or dip through out the frequency. ( ideal for most tube amps, really )
I used them in a rather open layout room of 14' x 19' (+ 12') x11'. Place them away from a rear wall and they can image and stage just like any other.
They had an electrostat like midrange, pretty good resolution and authority on the bottom end.
They come up on the Gon now and then. ( should go for around 2k$+ )
I did not purchase the pair since I wanted the impact and resolution of larger full range speakers. ( still looking! )
btw, I won't get too hang up on a sensitivity rating. For the most part, I found Jota needs a stable load through out and hopefully no complex xovers...
From my experience, I think ur 300BXLs amp works fine with any 87-90db speakers as long as you are not a bass lover. If u do so, I suggest you try > 90db speakers.
Anyway, the choises is so many, but u should define yourself first, audiophile or music lover?
If you are an audiophile, I suggest you try like -> Proac one se, Vienna Accoustic, Von Sxxx (I can not remember the spelling), Sonus Faber, Reference 3A and etc.
And If you are a music lover, try lowter, fostex, Cain & Cain, Omega and any full range speaker.
Anyway, I suggest you keep around USD500 for a good AC cable, it will give a big improvement on ur system.
