The Stereophile review sounds great but I think they are a little big. At 6" x 4" x 5.25" each and 6.7 lbs total they might have to be packed in my checked baggage when flying and then there's no telling what might happen to them.
Anything smaller? Maybe super-portable?
Follow Ups:
I have done a research for super small speakers. Most of the small ones are in the 6 inch size. The only smaller one is a 4 inch cube by Monitor Audio called Radius 45.Of course the low bass will be missing.Infinity and Canton also have slightly bigger speakers. These speakers are not powered. The great advantage of Audioengine is that it has built in amp.Are we allowed to carry speakers and amps on board the plane?
Why not settle for a nice Sony low noise headphone?!!
Looks like it's going to be the Audioengine then. Carrying a separate amp is out of the question and I guess that's as small as they get. $200 is great too. As for carrying them on the plane, do you have reason to think they wouldn't be allowed?
Headphones are cool, but speakers are much cooler.
Furthur research has revealed that there is a mini ZVOX which is a single unit with drivers and amp.The size is 13x3.3x10 and weighs 9 pounds.Costs $200. This has surround sound in one unit. The bigger ZVOX was a recommended speaker in the Stereophile list last year.In comparison a pair of Audioengine would be 6x8x5.3. However you can place this pair apart and thus will be better suited for various hotel rooms.
Good luck!
I have a pair of the Audioengine 2's and used them on a vacation to Mexico over the holidays. They were packed into my carry-on luggage, speakers placed with the drivers facing each other to protect them. The Seattle security scan got no reaction, but in LA they wanted to look at them both times through. Both times they wanted to know where I bought them, as they were impressed. I would expect that this is going to be normal until they have scanned a few pairs.
