Anyone think I'd be anything but completely insane to buy a pair of Linn Komri's from the 'gon, for fifteen grand? They retail for almost fifty, and the guy sounds like a motivated seller.Still, if they're shot from being over-driven, I'm gonna feel like a dope.
Feel free to kick my *ss, now.

Why are they so expensive to start with?
...they kick *ss.
OK. As a supplementary question Mr. Speaker: why are they so ugly with those chrome things around the top drivers?
They have that ugly thing -- and it is ugly -- because that's how they can get the center of all those noise makers (upper midrange, tweeter, and supertweeter) almost perfectly coincident. The material has something to do with not resonating, or something.
Of course I was never very serious about this: In the last year I've bought at least a half-dozen different items from Audiogon and essentially all of them have been damaged or in some other way in need of service. When it's a five hundred dollar integrated amp, I can suck it up. If it were fifteen grand on a pair of speakers, I think I'd have to slit my wrists. At the other end of the spectrum, I could buy the Neat Mystiques, the Wharfedale Emerald 97's, *and* the Vandersteen 2ci's, and then keep the Linn Ninkas and the Audio Physic Spark IIII's, to see what I liked about all these different combinations.
Right now, partly on the advice of Kuma, the agenda is to get the AV2 and Nait5i fixed, first, and then install the room treatments, and *then* see if I want or need to do anything differently in terms of speakers.
Still, I love the idea of being "Mr. Speaker," instead of "Mr. Idiot," which is not a million miles from how I feel about all of this right now.
I read the ad and did not arrive at the same possibility of the reasons for the sale. He/she might need immediate cash because of loss of employment, recently diagnosed terminal illness, an illness in the family, etc...who knows why until you contact the seller? It makes more sense to investigage further with the seller before making such derogatory comments on a public forum.

I just went back and edited the previous post. The original was a lame attempt at gallows humor, made doubly inappropriate by the fact that the guy gave his name and cell phone number in his listing. On some other planet it might have been funny -- I remember laughing my butt off when a friend of the family bought something very inexpensively from someone in the predicament that I had just speculated -- but in writing, in public, you're right: not appropriate at all.
