I was wondering what this would be.
I love my CS 3.6. However, I have work to do, critical monitoring applications, where I'd be pretty close to the speakers, and I wouldn't have the space for something bigger than large bookshelves.
I do my best work on the Thiels. What can I get that'll do justice, that are smaller and better in the nearfield? I'm looking for something that is the size of yamaha ns10s or the tannoy actives. Thanks.
Follow Ups:
Right now I am listening to Shivkumar Sharma on Santoor accomapnied by Alla Rakha on Tabla playing Ragas Shankara and Jhinjhoti. To properly reproduce the unique sound of Santoor, the tweeter and the midrange drivers of the speakers have to be perfectly time-aligned. Theil 2 2 as well as 3.6s do this effortlessly due to their first-order crossovers. I have tested 3.6s on many other types of music and it has been a clear winner over many other speakers costing lot more.
3.6s go down to about 30Hz, the lowest notes of the Double Bass. When you go smaller, your bottom end begin to shrink. If you have lived with those for some time, you are definitely going to feel a loss of definition in the sound. Low end of the spectrum set up the all important canvas for the rest of the music to do its magic.
These are the things you will miss and I hope you can find the small speakers you desire. As someone below suggested, have you tried smaller Theil speakers? If not give those a try.
Good Luck!
Priya
Hope for something good, but nothing small will compare except possibly Merlins.
Why not try smaller Thiels?

Avalon's are higly over-priced, period. For that sound, one can find much better speakers for lot more less. I have done a side-by-side comaparison of Avalons and Vandesteen 2Ce and latter did lot more for my musical enjoyment thna the former. If there is one area where Vandies fell short, it is for the bottom-end sound of the Avalons. Again, the price difference of these speakers are pretty big.

Reference Recordings uses them, I believe.
