People who buy expensive large speakers want more bass than that -- although they could always plug their bass port for a more gradual roll-off.Most sealed enclosure two-way speakers have the smooth bass roll off (12dB/octave) you prefer.
I haven't been reading Stereophile regularly in the past two years -- you sure pointed out two good examples of bass peaks that can't be explained solely by a microphone proximity effect.
Maybe a new trend.
Follow Ups:
My speakers give usable output into the mid 20 hz range. In my room they are flat to 35Hz and slowly roll off from there. Here's some measurments I did from 10 feet away at 75dB from 50hz down to 21hz.
In the mid 40s I had a lot of vibration in the room from loose objects. Pulling them out from the wall may decrease this just a bit to.But I don't have the space to do this. Also the tones lasted 10 seconds each.In real music the frequencies don't exist that long any way.So I don't hear any problems when listening to music .Not bad for a single driver speaker ;-).60dB 21hz -15
