Has anyone had any experience with these supposedly tube amp friendly babies ? I am looking for some small monitors for a vinyl based second system - probably driven by a push-pull EL34 based integrated (30 watts or
so) and a Rega 25 plus EAR phonestage.Alternatively, I have a line on some Harbeth LS3/5A at a great price - any info on these most welcome
Cheers
Hi Cato--I've got a pair of these. They may be tube friendly with respect to smooth impedance, but they are inefficient--85 or 86 db. Not for SE 2a3 amps. I've tried 'em with Quad IIs, a homebrew 300b, and some vintage Eico and Scott gear. Best overall sound I was able to get out of them was with a restored Scott 299c (p-p 7591s, ~30 watts). The 300b amp was very nice as long as the program material wasn't dynamic--ran out of steam with symphonic works and R&R.
I think Spendor makes a version of the 3/1 that is ported, with a slightly larger enclosure. It is several db more efficient and may make a better match lower-powered tube gear.
Good luck!
Jim
I've heard the Spendor 3/1 and 2/3 run by a pair of VTL Tiny Triodes, and the result was a good match. Very smooth, and ok bass extension for such a small box (3/1). I've also heard them run off some home brew low wattage tube amps, and they did not present a problem.
A friend and I both have Spendor 2/3s and they have worked well with every tube amp we've tried. From a 20 watt Sun 300B PP amp to a Jadis Defy 7. For the record they also sound great with my Exposure XV.Haven't tried an SET , but I think Vinylly has that covered in the other post. The only caveat might be that the 3/1 is 3db less efficient than the 2/3 ,but I'm pretty sure the impedence would still be tube friendly. Good Luck
The nomenclature of Spendors baffle (pun intended) me.Which ones are the 2/3 ? - Do they fall between the 1/2 and 3/1 ?
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Cato
The 2/3 is betweem the 3/1 and the 1/2. The 2/3 is a little closer in size and appearance to the 1/2. The 1/2 and 2/3 share the same mid-bass unit. The 2/3 and 1/3 share the same tweeter. The 1/2 is a 3-way, the third driver is a 1.5 " softdome .According to spec, the 2/3 and 1/2 are the same in efficiency and max spl's.
If the Spendor SP3/1's are anything like my SP100's then they are very amp friendly. I'm using an 8-12 watt (?) 300B SET amp on them now and they are a delight. I would recommend Spendors anytime. Don't know anything about the Harbeth though.
