Will never go back , Curious to see if my review stays on Yelp especially.
Charged me $212 to replace 2 dial meter bulbs(solder the wires on) and a 6 inch length of wire were the parts compliment. An Accuphase T-100 tuner.. bottom cover plate comes off and tubes are right there staring at you. no digging no fuss. Ive done it before. let my guard down and took it into this shop. Lets face it,,even at today's prices that a $100 overcharged.. It's without a doubt a 20 minute job for a tech if that long. So, lets call it an hour. Beware anyone in the Bay Area. Its my fault really. Should of tried to get an estimate for the entire repair before it was done. The guy says he does not have an hourly rate. Had the nerve to tell me he took 2-3 hrs to do it. Just looking at him saying that I could tell he didnt believe it himself. My sense is this goes on quite a lot and most people wont complain. I am,, but then it doesnt get some money back. So at least I am putting it out there.
how about this as a analogy of sorts. Cost me 500 & change to get a complete overhaul/restoration on a MR74 from Absolute Sound Labs. Great work,, really friendly guy/great customer service. Authorized Mac tech,, etc. by that reference it would have cost $2k to have the same work done at CHAMPLIFIER. Actually would have been more I suspect.
I read this banter about who is right or wrong , except this is the classic old school philosophy the "customer is always wrong" .
Today in a consumer centric market this is a wrong philosophy , whether the customer is a somewhat technical aware or just a little old lady.
I work in the auto business and the type of repair was outlawed years ago . In california
a written quote is given , flat rates advertised for different level of labor / repair.
Before market regulation people would roll out of a shop at times with a final price 100%+
higher than verbalized before the repair.
It's just out of common sense to be consumer friendly.
I like for example my Magnum Etude ft101a . Dynalab quotes $150 fine align the tuner stages after soldering in a new tuning 'pot' for $30 . One man does it all. And from the beginning of the conversation they are helpful with saving money on the shipping , this is consumer friendly , not three bulbs soldered for $ 210.
You don't have to take my word for it , below is the contact info for Dynalabs , and compare this to a three bulb repair.
I complained for years we as consumers need a regulatory agency for the green market that's emerging , just like the B.A.R. (bureau of auto repair), to avoid this three bulb rip-off.
More and more people want a green option , keeping dumpsters clear of quality equipment
and an industry standards agency can keep the dump sites , dumpsters , clean of pollution
and consumers willing to spend money on properly priced repairs.

Skippy, yours seems to be the only bad review. Why didn't you change the bulbs yourself as you have done in the past? No hourly rate, no estimate? Me thinks there is more to this than you tell ...
thats the story, why would you think I made this up or there is something more? Thats not my style. I have been around the block a few times and have to wonder actually what your agenda may be considering how you addressed me. Thats not how my name is used. So whats your angle in this? read my review on yelp or google if you would like a little more info. I didnt because I am very preoccupied with actually more important issues. And I have to say, I detect some hostility or something akin. It would appear that you are here to confront rather then take note of the details as they are presented to the best of my ability. I think a lot of the negative reviews get dropped, at least that is what is said about these reviews . I did a review on a car stereo shop in Berkeley a few years back on Yelp and it was removed. Im sure this guy has been doing this all along when he felt like it was a good opportunity. Likely he misjudged. Thinking that because of my being well into my senior years that I would be easy. He just picked the wrong person.
I did read your review and have no agenda, sounds like sour grapes to me. You had your tuner worked on without a previous estimate, then complained about the price because you already had an amount in your head on what YOU think it should cost. Now you think he took advantage of you because of your age. Is that about it in a nutshell? I don't think it was a fair review!
The sum of all this is quite simple. If you cant see it , I cant help that. it doesnt take much vision. $212 is simply a rip off for replacing 2 bulbs and a piece of wire. Do the math. All other subjective/personality/ageism issues are really irrelevant . Obviously you have some sort of stake in the business or enjoy playing devils advocate and fail to see with any clarity the lack of ethics exhibited by charging so much. I cant help you see this. Apparently the incongruity of the cost of repairs when comparing a complete AUTHENTIC restoration on a Mac tuner as compared with replacing 2 light bulbs on this tuner is not clicking for you. Cant help you with that. You come on here acting in a disrespectful manner taunting and accusing me of making things up. Take it somewhere else . Sour grapes? How about being pissed off for being ripped off. I am not going to continue this conversation with you. So good luck on your assessments.
I did not find those reviews very convincing. The all had the same or similar catch praises and appeared to have been written by the same person. Of course a can't prove that, but it does give me pause.
"The sum of all this is quite simple. If you cant see it , I cant help that. it doesnt take much vision. $212 is simply a rip off for replacing 2 bulbs and a piece of wire."
- if that is the way you feel, why did you contract with him do do it?
"Do the math. All other subjective/personality/ageism issues are really irrelevant".
- what math, I never saw an estimate
"Obviously you have some sort of stake in the business or enjoy playing devils advocate and fail to see with any clarity the lack of ethics exhibited by charging so much."
- Oh yea, my electronic empire reaches to southern California, as far as ethics go, if you don't like the price, take it elsewhere or do it yourself.
"Apparently the incongruity of the cost of repairs when comparing a complete AUTHENTIC restoration on a Mac tuner as compared with replacing 2 light bulbs on this tuner is not clicking for you."
- what you are saying about some work done on a McIntosh tuner is hearsay, you provide no details of what actually was performed on it, how long ago it was done and who performed the work.
" You come on here acting in a disrespectful manner taunting and accusing me of making things up.
- gee I thought that is what YOU are doing to Champlifier!
"How about being pissed off for being ripped off.
- what about being pissed off at yourself for not doing your homework before hiring someone to do the work for you and then complain about it after the fact. Looking at your photo on Yelp, are you really looking at the world through rose colored glasses?
"I am not going to continue this conversation with you. So good luck on your assessments.
- Don't believe that for a second ...
