there is a new place to buy and sell gear online with zero listing fees called hififlow.
Follow Ups:
Hopefully in the next few weeks I will be offering a very good alternative to Audiogon. There will be some special offers for asylum members.
A studio is a financial black hole with good acoustics.
It is only vintage if it works. Other wise it is just old crap.

It comes up for discussion every once in awhile. The last time Rod made a point to mention newly highlighted links to his classifieds on the main page.

"If you are the owner of a new stereophonic system, this record will play with even more brilliant true-to-life fidelity. In short, you can purchase this record with no fear of its becoming obsolete in the future."
Do you think if I setup one of these auction sites up I would offend the asylum owners?
What would it take to give Audiogon a run for their money?
> What would it take to give Audiogon a run for their money?
A. Money. For development of the web site. Classifieds, auctions, a feedback system. Forums. There's no question that it can be done much better than Audiogon. The developers of Audiogon are either stuck using very old techniques or else they're just plain amateurs. From a user perspective the site has almost nothing going for it.
B. Time. Expect even a slow web site to require a lot of time in management and conflict resolution.
C. More money. You have to be in it for the long run or don't bother to begin with. It will take a long time - years - to get any significant traffic, if it catches on at all.
Expect continued development costs that dwarf those of initial development as users provide feedback and explain how the web site actually needs to work. You won't get it right the first time.
D. Participation of dealers. Unfortunately, the ones that are most available are the ones who've been thrown off Audiogon. Given how sleazy Audiogon is, that's really saying something. You have to really do something blatant to multiple customers or else piss off the douchebags that run the web site itself. The ones that remain on Audiogon are a mix of OK (doing what they need to make a living) and scumbags operating under the radar. Enticing them when they're so closely protected by Audiogon will be difficult.
E. Traffic. Without significant buyer traffic, even a free web site is a waste of time for a busy dealer that has to take the time to post listings on your site. It won't take too many listings without a sale to discourage them. How do you get traffic? See D. Or advertise. Paying money to advertise a web site with no revenue generally doesn't work out well.
Care to share details of all your positive transactions on that site?
I have not bought or sold anything from the site but the site has huge potential.Heck the site has to start from somewhere.
...do your homework by reading the numerous posts in Shady Lane about MSS Hifi and JB Audio Pimp, even including some posts by "Massimo" himself. And then run like hell.
I live in North Jersey and have been to MSS Hifi a few times. they have always been nice to me and let me walk around and view all the equipment and upon request they were always helpful putting gear together for me to audition (He has lots of inventory) without an appointment. I have since purchased speakers from them without incident and will continue to patronize their store. I am in no way affiliated, but thought inmates should get both sides of the story.

Another place to avoid.
"Another place to avoid."
Perhaps.
I have no experience with the individual or his business other than what I've read on Shady Lane. I just wanted everyone to know who they were dealing with, hence I posted the public information associated with the domain name registration, as pulled from Godaddy's.
Oh my, I've wandered into the wrong thread again....

there was a hi-fi dealer named "Dirty Don's Warehouse Audio". If the name itself didn't scare you away, the owner's attitude certainly would. It was indeed owned by a guy named Don and he spent some time at the shop where I worked across town. He expressed his customer service policy to us this way:
"We offer the 30/30 plan. For the first thirty feet or thirty seconds after purchase, we would provide return and warranty service."
This guy was a trip. I would avoid the MSS guy for the same reason. :)

on Wieuca Road in a small office building?
He had all of this obscure Japanese gear I had never heard of. I figured it was the same stuff GI's returning from Vietnam bought at their base.
This fellow was a big supporter of Atlanta's revolution radio, WRFG. Always good for a chuckle.
I remember Mr. Kramer very well. Bought my first system from him; well, most of it. ALWAYS at full price. Used to dream of having giant BOZAKs though I had no place to put them.
Julian affectionately called him, "that crazy old Egyptian". He was gruff but lovable. He was always nice to me even though I was fifteen when I first went into the shop. Buying something did give you access.
My mind visualizes him spitting cigar bits on the floor. That is how I see him. I remember thinking my Mother would not approve ...
He was a MARANTZ man at heart, I beleive. I would have loved to see that house of his on Northside Drive. A "modern" house in Atlanta - he was one of the more interesting fellows I have ever known. And at that age he was bigger than life. The house burned down and all of his gear was lost. I do think he told me it was all MARANTZ golden-age stuff. Even a MARANTZ crossover.
For the life of me I do not remember DIRTY DON and I spent plenty of time in Buckhead. Did this last longer than a few months? Was he the priest guy?
I spent much too much of my youth in audio stores.
...the guy who dressed up as a priest on Wieuca Road in a small office building?
I lived only a few minutes away on Lake Forest and ended up buying a couple of components from him. I haven't thought of that guy in decades. It was in the earliest days of "mail order" stuff.

Not the Reverend. "Doity" Don's Warehouse Audio was located out off Fulton Industrial and only sold highly discounted mid-fi Japanese stuff like Kenwood and Pioneer. He was the only competitor who used to come by the shop and shoot the breeze with Julian.
Do you remember The Stereo Shop? The original location was on Peachtree in midtown across from Piedmont Hospital and later there was a store in Buckhead down the street from Hi-Fi Buys. They had an eclectic mix of product ranging from Advent (where I bought speakers) and Dynaco to SAE and even Dayton-Wright.

I never did business with them though. In those days I only ever went to HiFi Buys, some place on Pharr Rd with a name I can't remember and Melton's HiFi on Buford Hwy.I confess; I've actually bought from MSS, except he just called himself the Audio Pimp at the time - I probably got lucky (and I won't go down that road again).
Can't remember now if they were on Pharr Road or Paces Ferry. But they had some great stuff.
My memory is equally cloudy, but you have both nailed in down for me - couldn't remember the name of the place and got the street name wrong. Time flies and it's been over 30 years since I left Atlanta. I just remember hanging out in that store and wishing my pockets were deeper.
Gee, remember Oz record store? I met a number of really nice musicians in that store.
do remember Peaches! It was located just south of Peachtree Battle and had an incredible classical section including all the good imports like EMI (not Angel) and Decca.

just a couple blocks down from the back of Hi-Fi Buys. Kramer was the original Bozak, Crown and Mac dealer and hosted several clinics. He later sold Mark Levinson.
rw
Is hififlow owned by MSS/Audio Pimp? If he is not the owner, I would not let one person spoil the party.
