I know more than a few things have been said about Johnny Boey / JBAudiopimp / MSSHI FI. I think my experience is a lesson for everyone.
1. Purchased a Dynaudio Confidence Center Speaker.
2. Described as 'Brand New and unopened'
3. Some time passed before I hooked the speaker up (I was renovating my house at the time).
4. Speaker sounded muffled and Dynaudio techs looked at it.
5. Dynaudio found
'Following examination of both Esotar2 tweeters and mid-bass units along with the crossover network, I can report the following...
Firstly, the box has been opened at least once before and not by a Dynaudio tech.
Dynaudio use proprietary clips on all their in-box speaker wiring. If a tech does not know how to properly release the clips they can break and/or snap the wiring. In this case, they have been cut and the wires resoldered - Dyn do not do this.
At some point the unit has been over-driven resulting in what is 99.9% certain to be fused tweeters. Whilst not showing a complete open circuit (i.e. fully blown) they are still passing current albeit at significantly less output than normal. As the wires to the mid-bass units have been resoldered we suspect they may have been replaced as a result of the same incident that fused the Esotar2s.
Obviously, if you purchased this unit on the basis that it was, "as new", I would be extremely suspicious of the store that sold it to you. If it currently performs as originally purchased, then it most certainly was not 'as new' when you acquired it and has, at some point, had work done. '
6. I asked Johnny where they had got this speaker from, this was his response:

'This was purchased directly from Dynaudio USA'
7. I then contacted Dynaudio USA about this. This is their response;

Mr. Finch –
I am sorry to hear about the issue with your speaker. However, just because MSS HI FI stated that the speaker was purchased from Dynaudio USA does mean that we in fact sold them the speaker, as there is no record of any speaker ever being sold to this company. Likewise, we only sell to authorized dealers and MSS HI FI has never been a dealer of ours. If anything, we may have sold them a replacement part or grille at some point for a different speaker they may have taken in on trade, but I can fully assure you that we have never sold any Dynaudio speaker to MSS HI FI at any point in time. Whether the speaker originally came from Dynaudio USA and sold to an authorized dealer only to later end up at MSS is a different story altogether. Regardless, warranty would not apply to any loudspeaker sold from any party other than an authorized Dynaudio dealer, as appears to be the case in this regard.

8. I forwarded this to MSSHifi who then told me in emails;
'Go away'
'Stop crying. You broke it while its in your possession. This item was not sold with extended warranty.'
'Cocksucking is what whiners do, that means you'
9. To make matters worse, Dynaudio suspect the original drivers have been replaced with generic drivers. So - tweeters fused, drivers replaced. Remember this product has been sold to me as 'Brand New and unopened'
I don't think I need to add any comment. The facts speak for themselves.....
Follow Ups:
I have been to their store and they are very hospitable, have lots of equipment and let me pick and choose Items I want to listen too. I have mad a few large purchases from them with no issue.
From my perspective: You bought something and didn't check it, thats on you. How do you expect someone to give you a refund over long period of time. You yourself noted that the package looked opened (Not factory fresh) yet you didn't inspect it.
Now if you inspected it and noticed the problems right away, I'm sure you would have had your refund.
I'm not affiliated with MSS at all just a satisfied customer with a different point of view of this situation.
OP:
I am so sorry to hear about your experience with this "merchant". I personally have over 240 100% feedbacks on ebay and a perfect (though small) feedback score on A'Gon. This isn't about me, of course; I would just like to think most people in our small community have somewhat the same values of honesty and fair play! Holy Crap- the economy is effed enough without this kind of crap to deal with! And to even think I MIGHT have purchased something from them, because I couldn't afford it new... Pisses me right the f-off. It takes strength, courage and a lotta balls to post what they said to you in their responses. I spent some time when very young in the CE retail sector working for people just like that. Hated every second! Sorry, angered me enough I had to vent... Thanks for the heads up on this! I know it's a slim chance but I hope things work out in your favor, somehow.
In a white trash sort of way.
There are 2 sides to this story. This is MSS HiFi's official explanation. What this very unreasonable buyer conveniently forgot to mention are:
1) the time that this purchase took place. MSS HiFi has sold so many units of Dynaudio Confidence Center that we lost count. We have done our research and we know that this purchase took place in 2008, either February or July of 2008. MSS HiFi has a very generous defective goods policy. The buyer would have been refunded in full if we were notified of any problem immediately. 2 years after the fact is simply not reasonable. Not even Walmart will take an item back after 2 years. Anything could have happen in 2 years. Yes, this center speaker was sold as new during Dynaudio's special offer to their dealers which you get 50% off dealer's cost of a Confidence Center if purchased together with a pair of Confidence C4.
2) that the buyer started the name calling, not us. Here's the complete email thread:

No, I was busy unpacking my new Atari from 20 years ago. Just found out that no one plays it anymore. I’m busy calling the dealer to whine.

Sir,
I purchased a Dynaudio Confidence Center described as 'new and unopened factory sealed'. It was bought from the pimp some time ago (well outside your returns policy ) . I have been renovating my property and have not had the opportunity to install the speaker into my system unit now. It didn't sound right.

Ha- that's the best you have got you fucking scamster .....
I've heard many complaints about MSS HiFi, this is far from the first. As a person who has worked in retail, HR, and CS I can tell you that regardless of how belligerent the customer becomes the person on the business end should maintain a professional demeanor. In your posting Johnny shows nothing but childish behavior. Period.
Also I may be mistaken, but I thought Dynaudio confirmed they have never done business with MSS HiFi. If that's the case then somebody is lying... want to lay bets who is lying?
Just my thoughts...

while the content of the original posters message does suck, if true, i'm slightly concerned that he just joined today and has made the same, multiple posts disparaging mss hifi. the audio pimp does have quite a tarnished rep around here. just seems odd to me that mr. finch never joined the community until there was something to complain about.

Yes, this is correct I'm a new member of this Forum. However I am a member of other forums, namely DTV (which suits me better as it is Australian based).
I have not reason to post BS - nor have I commented on MSSHIFI other than to present the facts as I know them, including my dealings with people such as Dynaudio USA, and their USA head whom is easily contactable for verification.
I have resisted wild speculative postings which many more experienced longer term members of this forum whom have/have not had dealings with MSS have made. i have simply presented my experiences with them.
I do not suggest that or think that JB/MSS knowingly sold me a speaker that had been altered like my post. That would just be commercial suicide. However, forum members should be warned that when dealing with operators such as MSS they should do so with the knowledge that the retailer is getting product from sources that greatly vary in origin.
I'm more concerned that the product was sold to me as 'new and un-opended', although again to give MSS the benefit of the doubt, their source could have done the same to them and MSS unknowingly passed the product on to me. In other words we both got screwed.
However, when I contacted Johnny to ask him where he got it from. He replied that the unit was purchased directly from Dynaudio. This is where the questionable dealings starts in my book.
It's not the first time something like this has happened. Some months ago there was an incident concerning a Synergistic power conditioner with the serial number removed. It got quite ugly, but the guy finally got his money back once Audiogon stepped in. Anyone can research the thread here on AA about it and optionally contact Synergistic Research about it, as I'm sure they vividly remember. The incident was one of many that resulted in Audiogon cancelling JB's (MSS Hifi) account and deleting his ads.
pf, although you're new here I think your posts have been spot on. Mike Manousselis has been with Dynaudio for a long time and is well regarded in the industry. From your description it sounds like he was doing his job and trying to help.
Caveat emptor, emphatically.

Did you buy from MSS Hifi through an Audigon ad? I had a similar dealing with MSS Hifi and I went through the dispute process that Audiogon has.
Audiogon made MSS Hifi take the unit back for a full refund, including all shipping costs.
You can read about my experiences by doing a search on the Asylum for: MSS Hifi buyer beware.
You should also file a complaint with the BBB.
Boey is really a terrible excuse for a human being.
He has also been banned from CES, THE Show, etc.
I saw red flags about this guy from the beginning.
No matter the price, you do NOT want to business with the likes of him.
He needs to find another line of work. The word is out.

It's very helpful. I will be extremely careful to NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE.
Yours is not the first post like this about this company.

I've almost done business with this company...now...I NEVER will under ANY circumstance...spread the word when this happens...people like this should be put out of business by the audiophile community! The 2nd Response from them is the reason I feel this way, not that you had a problem (those things can happen although this seems like fraud). You might also want to contact Attorney General Cuomo's office. They take this kind of thing VERY seriously...it happens to be against the law...fraud that is!
Best wishes and empathy!
The replies in #8 are unbelievable. Esp #3. Thanks for the warning.
Did you pay with a credit card? You should be able to get your money back.
Good luck.
I want to make things perfectly clear. I have not sought a refund from MSS nor do I seek one. I stupidly did no fully test this item for a long period of time (outside their refund sales policy) as I was renovating my house at the time. As I purchased a brand new / never opened product and being a speaker - I did not expect any trouble.
However, this item subsequently was found to be;
a) not new
b) had its drivers removed and replaced by a non- dynaudio tech
c) has got 2 fused tweeters which Dyna have quoted me $1999 (aus) to replace.
MSS told me in writing that they had got the speaker directly from Dynaudio USA. Dyna deny this.
Could be a Lot less expensive, if you went with something other than the Dynaudio tweeters. Might take a bit of fiddling with the capacitor on the tweeter, but you might get equal (or possibly even better) results with a different tweeter. I switched out my factory dome tweeters (not Dynaudio tweeters or speakers) with Aurum Cantus folded ribbons, and they blow away the stock tweets. I thing the G2's were like 150.00 USD a pair at the time I got 'em, about 2 1/2 years ago. I had to rout out the tweeter mounting hole a bit to make 'em fit, but a competent cabinet maker could do that for ya.
Dynaudio might make you a special deal, if you explained the whole mess to 'em.
Just a thought.
The Dynaudio in question would not likely just have a simple cap XO on the tweeter, nor would simply fiddling with cap values likely be sufficient to match a tweeter to them if they did.
