I have a SE KT88 amp that I like a lot (a lot alot). Genelex KTs and old Tung-sol driver tubes also contribute to the sound. It's about $500-$600 in tubes alone. Getting good sound with pentodes is possible but still pricey.
I also have a 6CB5 amp that puts out just about the same power and costs only $10/tube. The sound is close to the Kt88s and I wouldn't be upset if that's all I had to use. the " Vinylsavor website " has a few articles about building such an amp.
Another offbeat idea is to use the 6BG6 tube in PSE. They have the same general characteristics as 6L6s and available for $5-10/ea for 50s and 60s era USA tubes. Said to sound good, This is a planning stage project I have in mind.

I have plenty of KT88,El34,6l6. What driver tube are you using in your KT88 SET?
The gain tube is a Tung-Sol 6SL7 (round plate)with a 6SN7 cathode follower ( I found the Sylvenia W to sound the best, though the TS round plates are good too ).
A lot of guys don't like Cathode followers, I found it got the most out of the 6sl7 and sounds good.
I posted a thread about it on DIY tube forum. ( "So what did I learn" ), it's about 4 pages back now.
Just out of curiousity, were 6SL7s available in anything other than round plates?
Come to think of it, most 6SL7s have round plates; good point. There are a few I've seen otherwise. I was referring to TS 6SL7s though.
