In Reply to: Which Amp? Two dilemmas.. posted by Lennyf on May 21, 2004 at 09:41:55:
I've heard some version of all the amps you've mentioned except the Wright Mono8. You wouldn't go wrong with any of them - all very good sounding amps.
Given that you're ProAc 1SC's are only about 88db efficient, I would think that a 300B amp would handle them better than the other alternatives. I've heard 300B's with the 1Sc's in the past and think they work quite well together.
The descriptions of the differences between 300B's and 2A3's (and 45's) are basically consistent with my experience, except that my favorite tube depends on the speaker. I have two systems with essentially the same efficiency speakers (but two different types). In one (single driver fostex) 45's and 2A3's are clearly better than 300B's driving them. In the other, the 300B amp is clearly better than 45's or 2A3's. Of the Bottlehead amps, my favorite is the Paraglow's (I've heard both Paramours and Parabees).
I love my Welborne amps ( a Laurel 300B, and DRD45's) Both sound great and are very high quality parts - I love their looks as well. Used to have the prior model of the Lady Day, which didn't measure up to the Laurel's, but I understand that the new version improved it where it was weak (soft in bass, lacking a bit in detail).
It might help if you could hear a 300B amp with your ProAc's to see if they're your flavor.

Follow Ups:
Are you using the solid state rectification or the tubed? Also, did you super-size it and go for the "ultimate" version w/ upgraded caps, resistors, etc...?Thanks,
Hat

I went for the SS rectification for a couple of reasons - Ron seemed to have a personal preference, and I like the idea of not dealing with buying NOS tubes for rectifier's - costs have gone up so much in recent years. The SS rectification doesn't seem to imprint a signature on the sound that I can tell (compared to my other amps which have been tube rectified and compared to my memory of another amp that was SS rectified and I felt like I could hear it's impact). I have the base version.

Besides the fostex?I prefer my DRD45s first, then my 2A3 Moondogs, Then the 300B Billies driving my Klipsch Belles.

The other speakers are Adire HE10.1 Signatures (for a while DIYcable was putting together a built, upgraded version of the kit). soon to be replaced by Bastani Prometheus speakers (a bit more efficient - 99db - OB speaker). I now have the Joplin PP45 as well as my Welborne's - very nice as well. Depends on the music (and mood) which amp ) I prefer.
