In Reply to: FI X owners: Are you using 45s? Tube preferences? posted by pigmode on November 23, 2002 at 07:34:47:
If Sovtek 2A3 and Tungsol 45 are more or less indicative of 2a3 and 45 signatures, then I like them all. Probably 70% of the times, I like 45. The Sovtek is fuller and warmer on my "the Horn" by Ed Schilling. I'd listened to the 45 for months, and just swapped back to the Sovtek 2a3 and have been listening to them since.
Follow Ups:
I've been going back and forth between National Union 45s and Ken-Rad 2a3s. I have the Super X, which uses 5v4g rectifier; when I run the 45s I switch to a 5y3 rectifier. I like them both, but I just went back to the Sovteks, and I think I like them best of all with Unity horns. With the Oris 150 horns I think I prefer the 45s. But as they say in my hood, its all good.

Oh yeah, has anyone tried the TJ 300b/2.5v tubes in the X? Don Garber said it worked real well . . .

Hi
I could not agree more.. Garbers 300B is a stunning amp. I had the pleasure of having at my house for a few days after a friend purchsed it. I am using Laurels with the TJ's , black gates , Jensen coupling caps etc. driving medallion PM5a's. I prefered the Fi . There was something about it that was hard to really nail down, but I really liked it. Made me curious about his stereo 2A3 that you mentioned. I also think his new integrated phono/line stage is wonderful. ( Same friend purchased that as well). Comes very close to my Air Tight ATE-2 phono. Both are low gain mm phono stages and the difference between the two was much less than the respective price tags would have one believe.

Belyin,Although not directly comparable, I currently use the Fi X 300 with the TJ300B Meshplates (standard) to great effect. No, make that really great effect. Don's amp's are, to these ears, the most consistenly underrated SETs around here; sure, they get great reviews, but noone seems to push them much, or try them out in extreme combinations. This is what Brian is nudging me to mention below.
The sounds I've been able to get are so enjoyable, they've surprised me, my colleagues, and a manufacturer or two (using brand new/experimental drivers in my Hedlund horns)... Never has the amp been left wanting.
But appraised though: my 300B is capacitor-coupled, I think, and so the Fi X (2A3) would probably sound even more angelic. If I was to do it again, and maybe I will, I'd plump for Don's stereo 2A3 Silver version, TJ2.5s and NOS tube drivers, and try them with state-of-the-art full-range drivers and perhaps some low-inductance silver wire here or there. Yum, yum.

With the Galantes, the Sovteks are lively and extended up high--more romantic overall.
I worry about running the 45s with the plates mounted horizontally, but I have no room in my rack for a funky mount that would orient the tubes vertically (shrugs).
BTW, I have the intergrated version with Music Metre Canto ICs (Cu), and Acoustic Zen Satori speaker cables. A Y linestage will be added soon.
