Having listened again to it for the first time in probably over a year, I think I prefer this to any of his other discs.
It has some of the "by the skin of their teeth" arrangements, or lack of, that epitomises Astral Weeks, but with a few touches (strings, horns) that give it an edge, no, a push up into a higher dimension. Van's voice, while clearly no longer that of such a young man, is still capable of skipping and flying around, not just relying on phrasing as he came to do after his voice thickened.
I can remember hearing it for the first time and looking at a friend and both of us telling each other how we knew it was something special.
I haven't changed my mind across 30 years.
Its still my favourite.
