...Santana has the ultimate version of 'BMW' in my consciousness (the Mobile Fidelity version of this is often the first cut I play when showing off my system to someone), I personally like Patricia Barber's take on it.Having seen her live makes me appreciate her unique style much more.
You realize, of course, the song was written by Peter Green and first performed by Fleetwood Mac.

Yes, I knew that the song was written by Peter Green, but I am not sure that changes anything. "Ownership" of a song is not always granted to the author or the first person to perform it. The songs "Cocaine" and "After Midnight" come to mind. I really like the J.J. Cale originals, but they are never going to supplant Clapton's versions.I guess you are asking the question at a more personal level, while I was thinking more in terms of public opinion.
I don't want to harp on the Barber thing, we'll just have to agree to disagree on her. I will say this. If you have never had the opportunity to see Santana live, you are missing out. I caught them a couple of times in my college years, and their army of percussionists generate power on stage that just can't be recreated by a stereo.
