"killing me softly" in honor of a dictators ultimate demise. BTW, I do support our troops in both prayers and other means. It's a very tough job they're doing.Lyrics by John McCutcheon
My name is Francis Toliver, I come from Liverpool.
Two years ago the war was waiting for me after school.
To Belgium and to Flanders, Germany to here.
I fought for King and country I love dear.Twas Christmas in the trenches, where the frost so bitter hung.
The frozen fields of France were still, no Chrismas song was sung.
Our families back in England were toasting us that day,
Their brave and glorious lads so far away.I was lying with my mess mate on the cold and rocky ground.
When across the lines of battle came a most peculiar sound.
Says I, "now listen up me boys." Each soldier strained to hear
As one young German voice sang out so clear."He's singing bloody well y'know," my partner says to me.
Soon one by one each German voice joined in in harmony.
The cannons rested silent, and the gas clouds rolled no more.
As Christmas brought us respite from the war.As soon as they were finished, and a reverent pause was spent,
"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" struck up some lads from Ghent.
Oh the next they sang was "Stille Nacht", 'tis Silent Night says I.
And in two tongues one song filled up that sky."There's someone coming towards us", the front line sentry cried.
All sights were fixed on one lone figure trudging from their side.
His truce flag like a Christmas star shone on that plain so bright
As he bravely strolled unarmed into the night. Then one by one on either side walked into no-man's land.
With neither gun nor bayonet we met there hand to hand.
We shared some secret brandy and we wished each other well.
And in a flare-lit soccer game we gave 'em hell.We traded chocolates, cigarettes and photographs from home.
These sons and fathers from far away from families of their own.
Young Sanders played the squeezebox and they had a violin.
This curious and unlikely band of men.Soon daylight stole upon us and France was France once more.
With sad farewells we each began to settle back to war.
But the question haunted every heart that lived that wondrous night.
"Whose family have I fixed within my sights?"Twas Christmas in the trenches, where the frost so bitter hung.
The frozen fields of France were warmed as songs of peace were sung.
For the walls they kept between us to exact the work of war
Had been crumbled and were gone forever more.My name is Francis Toliver, in Liverpool I dwell.
Each Christmas comes since World War I, I've learned it's lessons well.
For the ones who call the shots won't be among the dead and lame,
And on each end of the rifle we're the same.

Follow Ups:
The cleverest line of deception invented by Bush I was that "Support the Troops" nonsense.
In other words, in order to get you to support HIS WAR, Bush I snuck in the back door and asked you to somehow support the troops. What would that entail? That is the line of crap this administration peddles daily. Were that true we would be holding vigils for the brave German troops who died in the snows outside Moscow. But no, the fact the troops are brave and are sent in by generals to do a dangerous job, does not make their job morally right. Or their actions beneficial to you or mankind. Focus on keeping them alive, and stopping the invasion and conquest of a formerly sovereign foreign country.

was a German general's description of the British troops from WW1.THe best way to support the troops is to avoid sending them to war. Bush merely means support the war and if he wants to exploit the deaths of thousands both American, British, Iraqi, other Moslem and everyone else for his political motives then he deserves every bit of crap to rain down upon his head.War always reminds me of the scene from Blackadder Goes Forth where General Melchett tells Blackadder to tell the troops about to crawl through barbed wire into the enemy machine gun fire that "we are behind them all the way". To which Blackadder comments, "Yes, sir, about 35 miles behind them".
Politicians of all colours find it easy to slaughter the young of another generation in the pursuit of their goals.
Well they can do it with absolutely NO support from me.
If there was one war worth fighting it was ww2 and that is now history.
If this is the best way we have to sort out problems then we will not survive for long.
If this world is here to support the armaments industry then you can also do it without my support.
The anti-war movement grows. Here there is a huge exercise planned for north Queensland next year involving thousands of Australian and American troops and it will include the shelling of coral reefs and other heritage areas.
I have already volunteered to help organise part of the protest that will block this huge waste of money and resource.
Information about this can be found here...http://lists.peaceconvergence.com/mailman/listinfo/ts-07
The exercise is called Talisman Sabre.
For one, I never said it was right or wrong. Are your emotions translating my thoughts? I'm glad you were able to express your position. A freedom many had to die for.

And that in fact the right to speak out was trampled if not killed in the name of the Iraq war (see "Patriot Act").

... the right to speak out apart from the right to speak against communism?
Vietnam? The puppet government of Vietnam was so good on freedom of speech Buddhist monks burnt themselves to death to protest the banning of religious freedoms.
Chile? Where tens of thousands were put in a soccer stadium and watched Victor Jara have his hands broken for playing his songs and then when the crowd started singing, watched him shot by automatic rifles.
US policy has been to buy, finance and aid any kind of nut job anywhere in the world as long as they were anti communist.
Taliban opposing USSR? You got whatever you need!
Military maniac wanting to run a Latin american country? Have these armaments and money.
On and on and on.
One attack on the USA and suddenly we need a war on terrorism... the USA IS the rogue state bar none.

PATCO?!!! You're fired!!!!

The USA supported unions in Poland even as unions in the USA (and in Britain) were being undermined.
Ah, the complexities of modern life!

WW1, Vietnam. What were they to do with freedom of speech or freedom?
Buddhist monks self immolated under the American controlled puppet government of southern Vietnam which did not allow them freedom od speech and only allowed catholicism.
Thousands died throughout central America defending freedom of speech against American financed dictators. Want to discuss Chile and the original 11th September atrocity, again US financed?
The attempted invasion of Cuba?
Freedom of speech?
Where?
Maybe...
