For me (YMMV) the Beatles were better than the sum of their parts. When they were recording together as a band, and particularly when Lennon and McCartney were actually writing songs together on a regular basis, the result exceeded their individual talents. When each song began to be a production of one member with little input from the others I think the overall quality suffered despite the occasional gem.

... and let's not get into what code we're talking about!
But like a great team, they could not only fill in each others... gaps perhaps, but could set up situations where the others could produce greatness. And I think we should include George MArtin there myself. When they liked him early on because he had produced The Goons, I think they opened themselves up to someone who could not only work with them, which perhaps wasn't the easiest thing in the world, but who could both push and pull them as well as realising their demands and inspirations.
