can you get past it?
Personally I'm dig'n Boys and Girls in America. Great straight forward rock and although I'm not nesecarily a lyric freak, some pretty insightful and timely lyrics.
For folks I've played the cd for, about a 1/3 mentions it sounding like a rock version of Springteen (they don't remember early Springsteen). Too me the arrangments remind me of the Counting Crows. But that's okay cause I dig that too!
Anyway, a more than decent listen that should fit nicely in your rock collection.

Follow Ups:
If ya like that opne...go get Seperation Sunday. Personally, I think it's much better...catchier with better lyrics.

I agree. They were a pleasant surprise..a tip from my local indie record store clerk.

Anything like the Bodeans ?

Nothing like the BoDeans at all. Much harder rocking. The singer kind of sing-talks the vocals. I have the album "Almost KIlled Me" it rocks wonderfully. A cross between old Aerosmith, AC/DC, Bad Company .... very heavily influenced by 70's hard rock, but with more of a punk edge. The album has the passion and energy of what rock should have, but his singing style gets a little tiresome (for me) after the entire album.
i like boys and girls in america alright but really love separation sunday, it has more of a story line like a rock opera and it rocks a little harder. all that being said , boys and girls in america will probably be on my year end top ten. i've heard they are great live as well. i don't remmber much about the bodeans but i don't remember them being like the hold steady.major complaints that some have about the hold steady are that the singer more talks than sings the lyrics and some think the arena rock guitar solos are cheesy. doesn't bother me a bit, though.
