I don't know what caused the phenomenon, but this period is generally seen as when the music business became the music industry.

Starting with Framptom Come Alive, there were several releases from that mid 70s period that just blew away all previous sales records (pun). Rumours and Boston were the two biggest, and since Boston was also their debut, they've held that slot ever since.
