They were the first rock and roll band I saw in person. They were on the John Bartholomew Tucker show and some how my dad got tickets and we joined the studio audience for Sam the Sham but to my dismay they not only were lip syncing but they had fake guitars! Yes paper Guitars! So that's why I say in person and not live.
Do you remember the JBT show? I thought he was local but wikipida has him as a east coast personality maybe he was just doing a stint in SF.

A lot of those bands in that period were stuck doing some bonehead things, sounds like that was one of them.
Never heard of the John Bartholomew Tucker show before.
