Most of the album is correctly classified as "Parody" or "Novelty" perhaps but you get to a brilliant song like "City of Tiny Lights" and you forgive all the highly affected stuff. There's awesome musicianship to be found...

How about just enjoying some good humor from an important era? There is plenty of "serious" material for those born without the humor gene.
At least in his later years. I have been a fan of his since I heard "We're Only in it for the Money" but some where around "Zoot Allures" I found there was more chaff and less wheat until I finally stopped buying his records around "Joes Garage". I am still a fan and his live shows were incredible, Live at the Roxy being a great example. City of Tinny Lights was also one of my favorite songs on that record, I think I'll give it a spin.
