who is writing a project on the blues - my wife and I are trying to describe the blues to him, aand its not working - So fellow inmates, chime in with your two sentence defintion of the blues, suitable for a thirteen year old

I would play some -
Some orriginal - Robert Johnson, Howling Wolf, John Lee Hooker, et. al.
and some "new" stuff - early rolling stones, Eric Clapton, John Mayall, John Mayer...
It is a kind of religion- that has to be experienced....
The blues is the accumulated folk wisdom of African Americans that imparts the knowledge to survive in a hostile world not of their making through coping strategies of resistance, defiance, indirection, parody, or resignation. "Trouble in mind, I'm blue/But I won't be blue alway/Cuz the sun in going to shine in my backdoor someday."
The blues is American roots music which talks about the feelings of angst and struggle. When listening to the blues the listener not only relates with the musician but also feels much about it.

Song form developed in the South by African-American slaves. Arranged in a beck-&-call, 12-bar fashion, sung many times in the work fields... to express hardship and sorrows in their lives.
