But always enjoyed it when I've heard it. It doesn't completely gel, but parts of it, including the guitar solo, have always pleased me. The song smacks of Beatlesqueness, which is probably what gets my attention.

I always thought it was a late era Hollies song. Kinda over produced with too much studio engineering.

I can hear that too, now that you've pointed it out.
I heard Beatles because, at a point during the guitar solo, and once shortly after it there's some sort of an effect that was reminiscent of backwards tape sound. Lennon was quick to take credit for the Beatles being the first to include backwards sound, used on his song Rain, as well as claiming the first recorded feedback, opening his I Feel Fine.
