The problem (for me) with Megadeth after Rust in Piece, is, with a few exceptions on Countdown to Extinction, that they (well, Mustaine) clearly were trying to outsell Metallica, and they released some really, really, tepid material over multiple releases that was clearly written to be on the radio. While Metallica deviated from their original path, I can't say they followed the same path.
Follow Ups:
I really like a few songs from the post Rust In Piece albums; specifically 'Kill The King', 'A Tout le Monde', and 'Trust'. But yeah, otherwise there's a lot of forgettable stuff.
Maybe related...Mustaine has really lost his mind since getting clean IMO. Some of the things his stated on current events leave me with mixed feelings about supporting him with my purchases.
In order to leave Capitol Records, Megadeth still owed one album. They fulfilled that, by coming up with a Greatest Hits package, Capitol Punishment , which included a new song, "Kill The King."
A good DJ, radio station, or audio store will play under-the-radar findings, such as Megadeth's "Kill The King."
I liked those Capitol albums.
I have always viewed Megadeth and Metallica as yin / yang.
Healthy competition as well.
