Two main reasons as I see it. It has interesting lyrics but more so its the music. That reason is Brad Whitford usually the rythmn player is on lead and Joe Perry plays rythmn. This brings different guitar sound as well.I've always liked the tune.I liked it even more when I figured out it was Brad on lead. Why? Cuz when I was a youngster about 14 I was trying to be cool at 3AM in the Sheraton Central Park South,NYC.
I'm trying to look cool smoking a cigarette and from the mezzanine level see a band walk in carry guitars in the lobby one floor below. I can read Aerosmith on the guitar cases. Its winter 1973 so Aerosmith is not on the radio yet and known nationally. I thought cool name.
I didn't know who they were but saw two I would later easily identify as Perry and Tyler go one way and the other three go to the elevator. I quickly went to the elevator and pushed the up button. It stops and the other three were there. A guy with long blonde hair, a guy with brown hair in front and a guy with black hair in the back. The brown haired guy I later find out is Whitford says how's it going? How cool is that, he said something to a punk like me. The rest is history. I bought Get Your Wings about four months later from Columbia record club.
Give it a watch. Sorry can't embed from an Android tablet

Just read your other response of you actually seeing them perform it.
As Emily Litella would say....nevermind
YouTube has a few live versions too and Whitford is doing the lead. Explains the
tone and style difference. Some of the videos the shooter assumes it will be Perry and then figure it out and pan to Brad. Cheers!

I've always liked ALL Aerosmith up to Rocks.
Draw the line? A night in the Ruts-that was the start of their decline IMHO.
I'm gonna have to check the sleeve and see the breakdown for that great ROCKIN cut.
Are you sure? Joe's guitar is plugged into a talkbox, with him vocalizing the riff via a plastic tube(Peter Frampton)and doing the riffs. Brad is chugging away with that driving rhythm.
I saw them several times at their apex-Toys-Rocks tours. Don't remember if they did I that tune live, but as an Aero freak, I'm pretty confident Joe does the riffin.
I've mentioned several times here seeing them doing Rocks at the Santa Monica Civic with the unknown AC/DC opening. MAXIMUM ROCK AND ROLL
Do you mean to say "up through Rocks" or are you actually saying that you don't like "Rocks"?
Yes, thanks for catching that. I think "Rocks" is where Aerosmith peaked in creativity.
Everything after that, I gradually lost interest. Particularly after "Night in the Ruts"
Thankfully for Aerosmith, MTV revived their career in the late 80's.
Great story! I also didn't know that Whitford played lead on that song. He's a fabulous player. Gives Perry a lot of freedom to do his thing.
Even though Toys in the Attic is probably my favorite Aerosmith album, there's no denying how friggin' great Rocks is. I wish I had the funds to buy that ultra-rare Sony SACD pressing of it!

Great story- Thanks! for sharing.
I still remember it so clearly. Thanks for chiming in.

Love Aerosmith and thier song "Draw the Line"
it has a raw, different sound as well. I often wondered if Perry did not play Lead?
Thanks, that brings back a lot of memories. I remember I was 13 years old and on my birthday my dad took me to the record store. I bought that album, and I still think it is their best. Also did not know about Whitford on lead. I have always thought rhythm guitar players are criminally underrated for what they bring to the table, and the ability to drive a song without getting in the way. Malcolm Young is a great example.
I didn't know it was Whitford until I saw them live in the 80's. Cool story about getting the record with your dad. YouTube has live videos showing Brad playing the lead on the tune. Check the studio version again with headphones Perry's rythmn work is multilayered and of course not the norm since Brad is usually filling that role.
