It could be that they are just mediocre like a lot of the groups now. If they were around in the 60's or 70's their sound probably would not have sold any records. It's all in the timing. We had a thread going last week asking for the best decades for music. The 60's and 70's were the clear winners. If you made it then, you had something special going.
Follow Ups:
I never did see what all the fuss was about. And, yes, if they had come of age during the late 60s, early 70s I don't think they would garner the accolades they get now...

You may not like them, but that doesn't make them mediocre. There's plenty of bands that I'm not crazy about, but that doesn't mean they're not good.
If there is a band that you're not crazy about, then in your opinion they're not good. I don't see any other way of judging weather you like a band or not. I don't like rap music and I don't feel like it is music, but there are people who listen to nothing but rap. There is no scale to judge music on, it's what you like.
Maybe you could give OP a list of groups he should like, so he doesn't waste his time on mediocre bands. I could use some help also because I just found out that jazz and classical is dreck.
That's too bad. I think most audiophiles and audio enthusiasts like classical and jazz. It really shows off what your gear can sound like. Most of the HiFi shops I go to use jazz when they are showing off their gear. I think the OP answered your other question when he said that Wilco won't replace the Beatles, Stones, and Pink Floyd as his favorites.
I suffer from an affliction that allows me to enjoy every genre of music, movies,tv shows, so sometimes I get a little defensive when I think someone is being schooled on what is good or bad. And I will always love jazz I just recently built my first set of open baffle speakers talk about speakers meant for jazz, they are incredible. My girlfriend can only listen for a short time because as she puts it "they suck me in"
than the many hundreds of groups/artists in my collection from the golden age of the 60-70s. And I ain't no spring chicken either ;)
JMHO of course, YMOV

You're the exception to the rule. I'm glad you enjoy it.
I doubt, in that regard, I'm in the minority. Wilco are a great, refreshing, change. These guys (Tweedy really) aren't flash in the pans with albums having been released for the past 17 years, and counting, with no dropoff in quality. That said, they're not gonna outrank the Beatles or Floyd or The Stones or several other groups on my "best of" list. But now, they get lots more playtime than the 60-70s bands.

I was just trying to get a frame of reference for your definition of perfection. They're good for a band from the 90's till today. But they don't compare with the Beatles, Stones, Floyd, etc. who were from the 60's and 70's. Now I've heard the present day Stones and I can see why you are looking for some new groups to fill the void.
Mediocre. Got my blood pressure up a point or two.

Oh, oops, sorry about that. Anyway it's good to get your blood pressure up. Keeps the old heart pumping.
One of their best and in heavy play hereabouts....I also like everything Jay Farrar does with Son Volt and without. Uncle Tupelo, THERE was a band!!
