"I was just taking a swig of Coors light when I read this line and nearly asphyxiated it!"I always knew your tastes in beer would be about the same as your tastes in audio equipment....cat pee. Me, I'm a Sam Adams man myself but I'll occasionally have a Guinness Stout, a Becks, or a black and tan. On a hot day in St. Maarten, even a Heineken tastes great and the street vendors sell it for just a dollar...just the way they sell soda pop and ice cream here.
" Theory is a great place to start, but I choose to form my opinions based upon direct experience."
Has it ever occurred to you that scientists start with a theory and test it by seeing whether or not experience supports it or refutes it and if it refutes it, they have to come up with another theory consistant with the new experience? That's what science is about. Understanding that is where learning about engineering begins.
"mtrycraft was the undisputed king of speculating things outside his frame of reference."
Yes he got under the skin of a lot of people who called themselves "subjectivists." I don't recall his thread about long cables though. I don't read most threads on most boards, only the ones which interest me. A lot of people said he didn't even own an audio system, just a boombox. I assume you meant he is at audioholics and not alcoholics (anonymous.) But I do hope if he does drink, he does much better for himself than Coors Lite.
Do you remember a poster who used the moniker WARRENWARREN? He claimed to be an electrical engineer with a master's degree and a candidate for a PHD in RF technology. Then one day he accidently revealed (demonstrated) that he didn't know the difference between the mathematical models for twisted pair cables and coaxial cables. He then admitted he was only a technician, blubbered on about how he loved his job, his family, his wife, and his new baby, and started a long diversionary thread about flipping quarters and the odds of heads and tails. Then he left quietly into the cyber night never to be heard from again. That board was once a lot of fun for people who had brains and knowledge. Now it's just a mental sandbox for toddlers where the topic for the day is invariably, which HT system at Costco is best for the money. How can you stand it? Oh, I forgot, that's where you can lord it over them. At least you're not like JR whose motto is "off with his head." In a way, I can sympathize with him though. In his shoes, I'd have banned Steve Eddy on general principle too.

Follow Ups:
What I really enjoy is single malt scotches - say an Islay like Laphroaig or a Speyside like Glenfarclas or Macallan. I've toured all of those distilleries along with a few more.Does this sound familiar? Not when you add those high capacitance long runs of audiophile ICs to connect them to your monoblocks behind your speakers on the other side of the room. Then the shunt capacitance will be much higher and the hf rolloff will be in the audible range. . I use 2 meters of 80pf/meter cable. Amps sit next to rack with gear.
Evidently, WW was before my time there. Don't remember him.
Don't remember any of that at all. BTW, I'm a Glenlivet man myself. I like the one aged in French oak casks after they've been used to age sherry (I think it's sherry, not port.) Never enjoyed scotch nearly as much as that, I could drink it all day...if I don't keel over first. Learned to really drink scotch from an Irishman on a cruise ship round trip from NYC to Bermuda in 1989. He was a photographer who taught at NYIT and freelanced for National Geographic. I learned a lot about photography from him as well, especially how to take available light photos at night like cityscapes. When we stood next to each other, similar cameras and lenses in hand and he showed me what to photograph and how to look, it became clear to me that he WAS a photographer and I was just a snapshooter. A humbling experience. E-Stat, have you ever had a humbling experience? Hmmm, I don't suppose so.
A humbling experience. E-Stat, have you ever had a humbling experience? Hmmm, I don't suppose so.Most certainly. My wife and I are both figure skaters. Many years ago, our skating rink hosted a workshop with Micheal Siebert who was a US Figure Skating National dance champion. He was teaching us how to do choctaws, an advanced footwork manuever where you change edge, foot, and direction at the same time. Not at all an easy task. Yet, he made it look like child's play. His feet and legs made the transition with such precision that most of us felt like fools. It was amazing just to watch him skate, much less duplicate what he was doing!
One of my audio and music mentors humbles me most anytime we listen together. He has been a member of the ASO Chorus for over thirty years. A season ticket holder for as many years. He has been the liason between the ASO and Telarc Records for dozens of recordings. His record/CD library exceeds 10,000. It was he who introduced me to electrostatic speakers back in '76 with his Dayton-Wrights. He instantly hears subtle differences that take most folks (if at all) much longer periods of time to discern.
I wish I had the opportunity to be humbled more often in the presence of such talented folks. I would give my right nut to spend a day with Michael Schumacher on a test track. Humbled? Duh! Yet, I would likely learn more about advanced driving techniques in that space of time than years of simple discovery.
So do you remember WarrenWarren?
Nope. The search engine cannot locate any posts by a user of that name. Searching the test only finds a couple of posts where his name is mentioned, nothing more. Sorry.
For the first time in well over a year I visited your playpen and was astonished to see a thread dregded up with my moniker and old postings on it. When did I leave, about Septober 2004 except for one brief later encounter with JR? Don't you people ever find anything new to talk about besides the latest HT gear at Costco or Best Buy?

You'll have to ask Mash why he "dredged up" such.
Maybe they couldn't find anything else more interesting than their usual pablum to talk about. Well, perhaps I'll go back for another visit to see if they've gotten any further along...in about another year :> )
