I like the looks of early Naim Nait integrated amps,for example, but wasn't impressed with the performance of one I tried for several weeks. I don't now have any equipment I consider ugly, but used to have the Dynaco Stereo 70 and 120, both pretty good sounding amps. Someone once said the Stereo 70 looked agricultural.

But I covered that contingency. For although I care how my components look and I'm sure that plays "some" role in my final selection. I said "IF" two components sounded the same to me, I'd pick the one that looked better to me and I DON'T BELIEVE that means I'd pick and amp whose sound I didn't like because (or sounded a lot worse) just because I liked how it looked.
I'm sure the Objectivists here will blow this way out of proportion, but I'll go so far as to admit that if I heard a great sounding amp that looked like a breadboard with a spaghetti of wires and tubes pointing everywhere and also heard another amp that sounded very, very good, and looked like a finished manufacuerd product but just not quite as nice sounding as the "breadboard" amp. I'd probably pick the finished manufacuerd product!
Now before tearing that statement apart temper you words with this knowledge, the amps sounded very close but the "breadboard" amp while sounding ONLY SLIGHTLY BETTER looked EXTREMELY UGLY, wherein the finished manufacured product looked VERY NICE and sounded ONLY SLIGHTLY WORSE, but still very good. Now attack away if you feel the need, but at least I'm honest.
