Heads:He was psychically creating perceptions. The differences he heard were purely internal creations of his mind and were the result of psychological/social conditions like anticipation, peer pressure, visual stimulus, etc. The DBT tests eliminated these conditions and he is no longer psychically generating these perceptions
Tails
His perception was caused by physical differences in the equipment that resulted in changes in air pressure at his eardrum. The DBT tests introduced psychological/social conditions like anticipation, peer pressure, visual stimulus, etc. and he is now psychically masking the effects of changes in air pressure at his eardrum.
He is free to interpret the change in his experience either way, but we can never know which scenario was actually responsible for it.
