I am old school but my fantasy has been composing music via software. I haven't paid much attention to technical innovations in this area so forgive me if my question is naive. I've heard that Pro-Tools is the way to go but I don't want to spend $600 + just to get started. I would just get a Mac but it's a lot of money just to get one program.
Also, do you use these programs with a box that converts digital output to analog to feed amps? Thanks for any advice!

Hey guys I'm new here! :) Found the forum looking for a Windows alternative for GarageBand so this seems like a good place to post.
I've been using training from a site I found on YouTube: http://djtouchbeats.com/ they have a few free suggestions but I don't think they're as good as GarageBand is. There is a paid one they suggest called Turbo I was wondering if anyone else had tried it? It looks good but I don't really know what I'm looking at.
Thanks guys - it's been hard to pick one there's way too much choice!
Whats up ^_^
