I am looking at an ART 255 preamp to go with my Oppo 970 and Alesis amp. The outputs to the Alesis are no problem but the input on the ART are XLR or 1/4". Also, do I have to worry about impedance? I'm just trying to get some more gain while also adding some tube sound. Thanks.

I'm confused - not a rare thing, that.
Just what did you want to use the 255 for?

There is NO substitute for the live performance.
The subject line covers it. The have variable input impedance selections.
Notice the description of this one in link (Example)
"Provides Superior Preamplification for: Microphones, Instruments and Line Level Sources"
Will that only work as a mic preamp? If so, then maybe I am looking for trouble!

Yup, it's a mic preamp.
If you have a turntable, you need a preamp with a phono stage. If you're just using CDs, tuner, tape, etc., then a preamp with just a line stage will do. They come both ways. And if you have a moving-coil cartridge, be sure your phono stage will work with the output of the m/c - some of them are very low and need either more amplification, or a step-up transformer.

Simply get RCA to 1/4 adapters
Radio Shack carries them also
