Hey,
Guys this was originally on a bass guitar forum, but it was getting to technical for them so I leave this into the hands of speaker experts. Ok so I'm a bass player bent on getting an amp maybe a combo or maybe a head and cab. I was thinking of getting a really good ampeg combo, but ever since ampeg moved to china they have had terrible products coming out many amps don't work out of the box.
I was looking for an amp when I came a cross a Jackson 4 12" cab. It is meant for guitars. It also has a very good sound. It's also $100.
Now I know that some speaker replacements you can buy are for both guitar and bass.
This cab has eminence speakers in it I believe they are somewhere in the middle between eminences blue tick hound speakers and their black powder speakers which are both great guitar cab speakers.
I have heard if you put bass through guitar speakers it will stretch the speaker surrounds, because the speaker is not meant to move that much.
is this true?
If so would porting the cab help this matter? what is the best way to port a cab.
If this is a really stupid idea just tell me ok.
I know in frequency these speakers are loudest around 2k.
here's a detailed webpage about the black powder.

I can't find a website for the blue tick hound speakers. I'll tell you when I can.
Peace,
matt

Beef up the power section of the amp (run more powerful rectifier diodes... or change to ss from tube). Recap with caps rated at higher voltage (600 VDC instead of 450 VDC). And make a good cab. (load with 15-inchers would be nice).
If the amp uses 6L6GC, run 7581A. If it's EL34 stock, try 6CA7. Should be a little better on the bass. May need to increase the coupling cap mfd on some of the sections (1st gain stage and phase inverter).
Its a bit outside my experience but i would have thought the suitability of the 4x12 would depend on your style of playing.
If your in a reggae/dub band you'll never be happy with it, if your in a metal band, play with a lot of distortion and do not play a five string it could be quite good.
Anywhere in between I would eventually add a 15" or 18" in its own cab rather then experiment with porting. Even with porting they will roll off at 72Hz (according to your link) and your bass still has another octave below that. It should be enough to just put a capacitor before the Jackson to roll off some of the low end fed to them and run a 15" full range.
you can always experiment with the capacitor value to get the overall voicing right.
No idea about the spider thing but bear in mind that bass usually uses a lot more watts then guitar does. A friend of mine uses a 400w SWR and no matter what he plays through it is never anywhere near as loud as the guitarist Vox AC30.
You will probably fry the drivers if you try to keep up with a guitar amp on 11.
I'd see it as a useable stop gap solution which could be the basis for a really good bass rig.
Especially if you can get hold of a nice big, old Ampeg valve head!
(I do love the sound of a P-bass through a well-driven Ampeg!!!)
well unfortunately this is not the case I play a 5 string I have just decided to get an ampeg combo amp that is in good working order.
Thanks for the post anyways

It just so happened that my bass playing friend came over.
According to him 4x12 guitar cabs sound very good for anything other then dub.
And as long as the drivers are not Fane they will be absolutely fine with bass.
nobody answer this thread. how do you delete these?
