For my garage band i picked up some peavey fh1 bass bins to be used with 4 Yamaha sv15 club series speakers, The amp i use is a Altec 9446a(450cont/8 ohm 2 channel)i was told to use a crossover for these to get louder clearer sound without damageing drivers. Anyway i picked up an old furman tx4 crossover(free) how do i use it, does it go after the amp, if so will it handle the power of the amp. what are good crossover points, i was thinking of up too 200hz for the bass and no lower then 200hz for the yamahas using them for the mid/highs.
Any help would be so appreciated!
Thanks everyone,
Roger

I'm sorry, but I thought this was the "PRO SOUND" forum.
Last time I checked the definition, "PRO SOUND" didn't include wet-behind-the-ears amateurs who ask questions about how to use a crossover they got for free.
WTH!!?
Geez.
i'm sure you were wet behind the ears at one time.
this site is for info and a helping hand when asked so don't be a jerk...
First of all one amplifier is not gonna handle all of those loudspeakers
If you want to run a pair of the Yamahas off one channel on the amp
and the bass bins off the other channel on the amp you should be ok.
The xover goes AFTER the mixer then into the amp
Run out of the Mono output of your mixer into one side of the
xover
Run out of low output of the xover into one side of the amp
Plug your bass bins into that side of the amp
Run out of the High output on the same xover channel into the other
side of the amp and hook up two of the Yamahas to that side of the amp
Set the xover point anywhere from 100hz to 150hz
I prefer 150hz myself
should i hook up the yamahas to the mid out or high out
thanks for your help its greatly appreciated
Ok I found something on that xover
You can use it 3-way stereo or 5 way mono
So...you have an issue because you only have one power amp
Here is what I suggest you do
Dont use the xover for with your setup
Run out of the mixer straight into the power amp and then from
the power amp you can use two Yamahas per side or one Yamaha per side
of the amp
Your Furman is NOT going to work with what you currently have
Go out and purchase a two way stereo xover and use it in a setup
as I described in my previous post OR go out and get another power
amp and run three way.
I would say the easy thing to do is this
I think your probably on a budget so the cheap way out is to get
yourself a Behringer 2 way stereo xover
Click the link below to see the xover you should get
The xover comes with complete instructions on how to use it and set it
up with what you have.
Thank you so much for your help, I took part of your advice and picked up another amp it runs 100 watt continous 8 ohm/chan. i will use the altec to run the bass bins uoto 150hz then run the yamahas up form there into the other amp , should i plug the other amp into the mid out or high out, i was thinking the mid out and set the upper limit at 15khz, how does that sound and do you think 100watts/side will bw enough compared to the 450/chan for the bass bins
I wish i could buy you a drink you been very helpful. thanks again
Roger
100 watts is not much and you risk clipping that amp
Keep in mind clipping the amp is what can smoke a loudspeaker
Keep a close eye on distortion or any clip lights coming on
Personally I would go with something more like 300watts per channel
into 8ohms
Heres what you could do
Run out of the mixers mono out or one side left or right
Run that signal into ONE side of the xover input
Use ONE side of the Altec amp for BOTH bass bins
Use ONE side of the Altec amp to drive two of the Yamahas as mid cabs
Use left channel of the 100watt amp to drive another Yamaha
Use right channel of the 100watt amp to drive another Yamaha
xover points subs/150hz and set the mid freq on the xover to 800hz
So basically your gonna have a sub with a Yamaha on top of that upside down with the horn down. This will be your mid
Then you put another Yamaha on top of that mid cab with the horn up
This is what you do on each side
You will have to Y the signal together into the 100watt amp for the
highs from 800hz up
Basically your gonna triamp in mono
It will work fine
this is the setup im gonna try, the speaker placement you describe is the way i have them setup. thanks for all the help,
to the other inmate the only thing i have to say is, you were not born with the pro audio knowledge it is learned.
Kudoos goes to Pro Sound Guy
All your bass belongs too me.
